STODDARD COUNTY CONSIDERS JAIL EXPANSION

The average number of inmates being held in the Stoddard County Jail has risen significantly over the past several years, and because of that, the Stoddard County Board of Commissioners is considering an expansion of the existing jail facility. According to Stoddard County Presiding Commissioner, Greg Mathis, the jail was designed to hold 38 prisoners. Over the Fourth of July weekend, the jail had 89 prisoners. Mathis says in addition, the state is making changes to the rules that govern the housing of prisoners that will have an impact on the county. The Board of Commissioners has hired Dale Rogers with Robert Stearnes and Associates, Inc. out of Sikeston to draw up plans that will be used to request funding from USDA Rural Development. According to Stoddard County Commissioner Frank Sifford, one plan the county is considering would include a dormitory style addition for the housing non-violent prisoners.
