INFORMATION FROM OVER 4 MILLION PATIENTS TAKEN IN HOSPITAL CYBERATTACK

Hospital operator Community Health Systems said a cyberattack took information on more than 4 million patients from its computer network earlier this year.

The company said Monday that no medical or credit card records were taken in the attack, which may have happened in April and June. But Community said the attack did bypass its security systems to take patient names, addresses, birthdates, and phone and Social Security numbers.

The information that was taken came from patients who were referred to or received care from doctors tied to the company over the past five years.

Community Health Systems Incorporated is notifying patients affected by the attack and offering them identity theft protection services. The company owns, leases, or operates 206 hospitals in 29 states, including the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center and the Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett.

The hospital operator said it believes the attack came from a group in China that used sophisticated malware and technology to get the information. Community Health has since removed the malware from its system and finalized "other remediation efforts" to prevent future attacks.

EARLY VOTING PROPOSAL APPEARS TO HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE AMOUNT OF SIGNATURES NEEDED

A Missouri proposal to create one of the nation's most expansive early voting periods appears to have fallen short of the number of initiative petition signatures needed to make the November ballot.

An Associated Press analysis of tallies by Missouri's local election authorities shows the proposed constitutional amendment on early voting lacks enough valid signatures of registered voters in all but two of the state's eight congressional districts.

To qualify for the ballot, initiatives must get signatures equal to 8 percent of the votes cast in the last gubernatorial election in at least six of the congressional districts.

That threshold appears to have been met by supporters of a separate initiative that would curb teacher tenure protections and require public schools to evaluate personnel based on student performance data.

STATE SALES TAX HOLIDAY BEGINS TODAY

The Missouri Back to School sales tax holiday begins today.

If you make a qualified purchase during the holiday, from August 1st through August 3rd, you will not have to pay Missouri’s sales tax.

In general, qualified items include clothing less than $100, school supplies not exceeding a total of $50 per purchase, and all computers and computer accessories less than $3,500.

City and County governments can also choose to suspend their sales taxes for the weekend. Poplar Bluff has chosen to not participate in the 2014 Sales Tax Holiday.
