ONE DEAD IN CONNECTION TO WEEKEND SHOOTING
A Cape Girardeau man is dead following a shooting over the weekend.
According to the Cape Girardeau Police Department, 26 year old Anthony Lynn Hempstead was found with multiple gunshot wounds in an alley off of Jefferson Street Friday night.
Hempstead was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. The incident is under investigation by the Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad.
No one has been taken into custody in connection to the shooting.
MOTORCYCLE WRECK CLAIMS LIFE OF BLYTHEVILLE MAN
A Blytheville man is dead following a single vehicle wreck over the weekend.
According to the Arkansas State Police, 31 year old Antwann Q. Newborn’s motorcycle hit a utility pole Saturday in Mississippi County, Arkansas. Newborn was pronounced dead at the scene.
VICTIM IN SERIOUS CONDITION FOLLOWING SHOOTING
A shooting in Cape Girardeau has left one person in serious condition.
According to Cape Girardeau police, shortly before 7 pm Friday evening, officers responded to report of shots being fired on Cousin Street.
Officers were told that a male subject had been shot and taken to an area hospital. The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds and is in serious condition.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
WAPPAPELLO MAN CHARGED FOR ALLEGED ASSAULT ON A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER
A Wappapello man was taken into custody Friday night in Wayne County.
According to the Highway Patrol, 52 year old Randy Morris is facing felony charges of resisting arrest and driving while intoxicated – chronic offender.
Morris is also charged with drinking an alcoholic beverage while operating a motor vehicle, assault on a law enforcement officer, and child endangerment.
SEARCH WARRANT LEADS TO ARREST OF TWO SIKESTON RESIDENTS
A search warrant has led to the arrest of two Sikeston residents.
According to Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter, 18 year old Christopher Greer and Earl McDade were arrested Friday at their residence.
A search warrant had been obtained as a part of an ongoing investigation that began Thursday. The search resulted in the recovery of United States and foreign coins, other currency, and baseball cards. It is believed by investigators that the recovered items are from a burglary that occurred in the city of Sikeston.
Greer and McDade are each facing a felony charge of receiving stolen property.
DEXTER RESIDENT ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE
A Dexter resident is facing multiple felony charges in connection to her arrest Friday night.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 28 year old Nicole A. Smith was taken into custody Friday night in Stoddard County on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine; and possession of drug paraphernalia.
ROUTE Z IN STODDARD COUNTY TO BE REDUCED TO ONE LANE OVER THE NEXT MONTH
Contractor crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be in Stoddard County over the next month for a project on Route Z.
Route Z will be reduced to one lane with a 9 foot width restriction so contractor crews can perform pavement overlay. The work zone is located between Highways 25 and 153.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 am to 6 pm daily through Wednesday, July 30th.
MONTH LONG ROAD PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY
Route AF in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane with a 9 foot width restriction for the next month so contractor crews can perform pavement overlay.
The section of roadway included in the project is located from County Road 637 to Highway 25.
Weather permitting, work will take place today through Wednesday, July 30th from 6 am to 7 pm.
EXPECT DELAYS THIS WEEK ON INTERSTATE 55 IN PEMISCOT COUNTY
Motorists on Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County should expect delays this week.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Southbound I-55 will be reduced to one lane between Route O and the state line for pavement repairs.
Weather permitting, work is scheduled to take place daily from 6:30 am to 5 pm through Thursday.
SINGLE BOTTLE BEER SALES APPROVED BY GOVERNOR NIXON
Starting next year, Missouri stores will be able to sell beer by the individual bottle or can.
Governor Jay Nixon signed legislation Friday authorizing single-bottle beer sales by retailers such as grocery and convenience stores. Current law requires beer to be sold in packages containing at least three bottles.
The relaxed requirements will take effect in January.
MISSOURI GAY MARRIAGE BAN CHALLENGED BY ACLU
Missouri's constitutional ban on gay marriage is being challenged by a lawsuit in Kansas City.
The lawsuit was filed by attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of two same-sex couples who were denied marriage licenses last week by the Jackson County recorder of deeds.
The lawsuit contends Missouri's constitutional provision limiting marriage to one man and one woman violates the equal protection and due process clauses of the U.S. Constitution. Similar lawsuits have been filed across the country.
Court records show the Jackson County case was filed Tuesday.
ACLU attorney Tony Rothert said Friday that it wasn't publicized because supporters didn't want to distract from efforts in St. Louis.
St. Louis officials granted marriage licenses to four same-sex couples Wednesday, which also has prompted a legal fight.
MISSOURI’S SHARED WORK PROGRAM TO CONTINUE
Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has signed legislation preserving a program that encourages businesses to place employees on part-time status instead of laying them off.
The measure enacted Friday is intended to keep Missouri in compliance with new federal requirements for the shared-work program.
Nixon said about 335 employers and more than 21,000 people currently participate in the program. It allows businesses to split working hours among a group of employees as an alternative to laying some of them off. In exchange, the employees' incomes are supplemented with reduced amounts of unemployment benefits.
Missouri's program had to be revised to match federal guidelines, or else it would have ended in August.
Business groups supported the legislation, which could allow Missouri to get an additional $2.5 million in federal funds.
