HIGHWAY PATROL REMINDING MOTORISTS TO LOOK OUT FOR DEER 

With fall upon us, Missouri officials are warning motorists to watch for deer.  

Colonel Eric T. Olsen, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, tells KWOC News that deer are more active and create hazards for Missouri motorists at this time of year.  

The majority of deer strike crashes occur in October and November each year, with the largest number taking place in November. Although deer strikes can occur at any time, most occur between the hours of 5 pm and 7 am. 

Last year, drivers in Missouri experienced over 4,000 traffic crashes where deer-vehicle strikes occurred. One deer strike occurred almost every two hours in the state. In these crashes, there were seven fatalities and 400 people were injured.

MISSORUI DRIVER EXAMINATION STATIONS TO BE CLOSED ON MONDAY 

Driver Examination Stations in Charleston, Fredericktown, and Kennett will be closed on Wednesday. The Poplar Bluff Driver Examination Station will be open that day from 8 am until 5 pm. 

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol say that the closures are due to an administrative meeting.  

Normal operations will then resume on Thursday.

DATE SET FOR POPLAR BLUFF POM SQUAD FUNDRAISER 

A date has been set for the Poplar Bluff Pom Squad’s annual fundraising event, Princess for a Day.  

The Pom Squad will be hosting the fourth annual Princess for a Day event on Saturday, October 27th at the Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Center Cafeteria and Gymnasium.  

The event is available for all girls ages 12 and under. Tickets are $25 and include a princess tiara, hair styling, make-up, and more.  

Pre-registration will be held on Tuesday, October 16th from 5 to 7 pm at the Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Center Lobby.

KENNETT MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES 

An area resident was taken into custody Saturday night in Stoddard County on multiple felony charges.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 55 year old Oran Joiner, of Kennett, was arrested on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.  

Officials say Oran was held at the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Office.

OZARK FOOTHILLS REGIONAL PLANNING COMMISSION TO HOLD MEETINGS TO DISCUSS REMAINING FLOOD DAMAGE FROM LAST YEAR 

The Ozark Foothill Regional Planning Commission has announced a series of meetings to discuss remaining damage from last year’s flooding.  

Officials say that the Commission wants to learn about remaining housing and public infrastructure damage, as well as unmet housing  and public infrastructure needs in the counties that received presidential disaster declaration DR-4317 due to the flooding disaster of 2017. 

Area counties that received the disaster declaration include Butler, Carter, Reynolds, Ripley, and Wayne Counties. 

Meetings are scheduled for today at 9 am at the Carter County Commissioner’s Office in Van Buren and at 9:45 am at the Reynolds County Courthouse in Centerville.  

The final two meetings will be held tomorrow in Doniphan and Greenville.

SCREENING APPOINTMENTS BEING ACCEPTED FOR POPLAR BLUFF EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER 

Appointments are now being taken for the next screening day for the Poplar Bluff Early Childhood Center.  

The screening appointments for the current school year are available for children who were 3 years old before July 31st, 2018 and were not 5 years old before that date. The screenings will be held on Wednesday, December 19th.

APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR 2018 FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS AUTO TOUR 

Officials with the US Army Corps of Engineers say that permit applications are now being accepted for the 2018 Festival of Lights Auto Tour.  

The 26th Annual Auto Tour will be held at the Redman Creek East Campground from November 23rd through December 30th.  

Local businesses and individuals can decorate sites along the tour’s path with as many lights as possible. Officials say that the sites are free and the event is also free to attend.
