CARTER COUNTY AWARDED OVER EIGHT MILLION DOLLARS FOR FLOOD REPAIRS
Carter County has been awarded over eight million dollars for flood repairs.
Carter County Sheriff Richard Stephens says that yesterday morning, commissioners signed a contract with FEMA accepting their award of 8.6 million dollars to rebuild the jail, sheriff’s office, and courthouse.
The Carter County government buildings were heavily damaged during the flooding that occurred in 2017.
MAN DIES FROM INJURIES HE RECEIVED IN A WRECK IN DUNKLIN COUNTY
Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, a Steele man has died from injuries he received in a wreck earlier this week in Dunklin County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred at around 5 am Wednesday on US Highway 412, approximately two miles west of Cardwell.
A vehicle, driven by 25 year old Dylan Hicks, of Steele, allegedly crossed the center line of the highway and struck another vehicle head on.
Hicks was transported to a Paragould hospital with serious injuries and later moved to Memphis hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the second vehicle suffered minor injuries.
SEMIFINALS SET FOR 32ND ANNUAL POPLAR BLUFF BASKETBALL SHOWDOWN
The semifinal matchups have been set for the 32nd Annual Poplar Bluff Basketball Showdown.
The Poplar Bluff Mules advanced to today’s semifinal with a 63-58 victory yesterday over Memphis Central.
The Mules will take on Fayetteville High School tonight at 7 pm. Fayetteville defeated Christian County 74-34 on Thursday.
The other semifinal will be an Arkansas-Tennessee matchup as Jonesboro takes on Humboldt at 8:30 pm.
The two consolation matchups today will be Kirby vs. Kauffman at 4 pm and Memphis Central vs. Christian County at 5:30 pm.
Today is also the day for the Slam Dunk and 3-point contest, which will begin at 10 am.
WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK
An area woman was seriously injured Thursday afternoon in a single vehicle wreck in Wayne County.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC news that 40 year old Trina Cook, of Eminence, was driving on Highway 34 in the Piedmont area when her vehicle ran off the side of the road, struck a traffic sign, and then a tree.
Cook suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.
CONGRESSMAN JASON SMITH SPEAKS TO AREA RESIDENTS DURING EVENT IN POPLAR BLUFF
Southeast Missouri’s congressman in the United States House of Representatives made a stop in Poplar Bluff yesterday to hold a public forum.
Representative Jason Smith spoke with area citizens about the government shutdown and border security Thursday at Jen’s Diner.
On his Facebook page following the event, Smith asked anyone who could not make it to the forum to visit JasonSmith.house.gov/contact and say what they would like to see in a deal to reopen the government.
WEIGHT RESTRICTION IN PLACE ON MISSISSIPPI RIVER BRIDGE
Illinois transportation officials say a weight restriction has been put into place on a bridge over the Mississippi River.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, combination vehicles are being restricted to 37 tons and single unit vehicle to 33 tons on the US 60/62 bridge over the Mississippi River.
The weight limits were posted yesterday and went into effect immediately.
Officials say that repair plans are in progress, but no implementation plans are in place yet.
