THIS WEEK IS SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK IN MISSOURI

Missouri residents are being encouraged to learn about severe weather and how to protect themselves during Missouri Severe Weather Awareness Week this week.

Today is NOAA Weather Radio day.

NOAA Weather Radio provides continuous broadcasts of the latest weather information from your local National Weather Service Office. A NOAA Weather Radio is one of the few devices available that can warn you of impending severe weather 24-hours a day.

During severe weather, NWS warnings will interrupt the routine weather broadcast. If your radio is set to alert mode, it will set off an alarm, and broadcast the message.

There are many other ways to receive NWS warnings including our radio station, your television or cell phone, and the internet.

The Wireless Emergency Alert System is available in newer cell phones. There is nothing you need to download. The cellular carriers receive NWS warnings, and then send select warnings to the cell towers that cover the area in the warning.

If you are within the coverage area of a tower that receives the warning, your cell phone will emit a sound, and the message will appear on your screen.

MOTORISTS ASKED TO REPORT POTHOLES ON MISSOURI ROADWAYS

Missouri motorists are cautioned to be on the lookout for potholes.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, potholes form when temperatures warm up during the day but continue to be cold at night.

Moisture from winter rain and snow constantly seeps into the cracks and joints of the roadway. When the temperatures drop at night, that water freezes and expands the pavement, which causes it to crack and bulge.

As cars and trucks drive over those cracks, the pressure causes chunks of pavement to pop out, and potholes are formed.

Throughout March, maintenance crews will be repairing potholes to keep roads as safe and smooth as possible. The public is asked to report potholes so MoDOT maintenance crews can assess the damage and complete the needed repairs.

Motorists can report the location of potholes on state maintained roads by calling 1-888-ASK-MODOT or by going online to modot.org.
