POSSIBILITY OF SEVERE WEATHER TODAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A line of strong storms entered Southeast Missouri early this morning and weather officials say that chances of severe weather could persist throughout today.

KWOC News spoke with National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist, Rick Shanklin, about today’s weather.

Rick Shanklin:

Yeah we're looking at a chance of severe thunderstorms for today, in fact we have a level two of level five risk for severe thunderstorms for this part of Missouri. And just a reminder, anytime we talk about severe thunderstorms we’re talking about storms that produce winds of at least 60 miles an hour or hail one inch in diameter or tornadoes. So again that possibility exists for today, a level two of level five. We’ll have to watch the course of the morning how much shower and thunderstorm activity we have how much cloud cover, because that would come into play as far as kind of putting a lid on any thunderstorm activity or at least severe thunderstorm activity, if we have enough of that. If not, as we become more unstable this afternoon and into this evening, we could see thunderstorms develop again and some of those possibly become severe.
