SEVERAL SCHOOLS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI CLOSING DUE TO COVID-19

There are several schools in Southeast Missouri that will be closing due to the COVID-19 virus.

Affected schools include Poplar Bluff R-1, Twin Rivers R-10, East Carter R-2, Naylor, Puxico R-8, and Neelyville R-4, which will all be closed until April 3rd in an effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The Sacred Heart School of Poplar Bluff will be closed until April 6th on evaluation.

Additionally, Lesterville R-4 closes today through April 6th, and Pemiscot County R-3 will be closed from March 18th through 20th, going into their scheduled spring break.

Portageville School District will also be closed from March 18th through the 27th, moving into their spring break.

The Greenville R-II School District will be closed Thursday, March 19 through Friday, April 3

HOUSE DESTROYED BY STRUCTURE FIRE IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

A house in Kennett was destroyed by a structure fire on Monday.

According to the Kennett Fire Department, authorities responded to a structure fire on North Jackson Street in Kennett, where a home was completely engulfed in flames by the time the department arrived on the scene.

No injuries were reported, and the investigation into the start of the fire is ongoing.

INJURIES REPORTED FROM VEHICLE COLLISION IN BUTLER COUNTY

There were injuries reported following a vehicle crash in Butler County on Monday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on Route W – north of Poplar Bluff – where a vehicle crashed into another car while it was making a left turn.

An occupant of the struck vehicle received minor injuries as a result of the incident, and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

ROAD IN CARTER COUNTY SCHEDULED TO CLOSE

A road in Carter County will be closing while crews perform repair work.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, two sections of Eastbound US 60 in Carter County, one between County Road 163 to Route J, and one between County Road 143 to Parson Drive, will be closed while crews perform pavement overlay.

The work is scheduled to take place from March 23rd to April 30th, from 7 am to 7 pm daily.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE IMPLEMENTING SOCIAL DISTANCING

The Poplar Bluff Police Department will be implementing a social distancing measure in regards to the COVID-19 spread.

Officials with the department tell KWOC News that to help stop the spread of the coronavirus, officers will be keeping their distance from residents, and will avoid physical contact as much as possible.

Officers may ask individuals to step outside of their homes in the event of a call to their residence.

Residents who are quarantined and wish to make a non-emergency call can call the department at 573-785-5776.

SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE THROUGHOUT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

There will be some scattered thunderstorms in the area from today throughout the week.

According to the National Weather Service Office in Paducah, there will be scattered thunderstorms looming over most of the surrounding area between Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning.

The storms could escalate during this time, and residents are advised to keep an eye on their local weather service.

DRIVER INJURED FOLLOWING VEHICLE CRASH IN STODDARD COUNTY

A driver was injured from a vehicle crash in Stoddard County on Monday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that a vehicle struck the end of a bridge on old Highway 60, near Dudley, before becoming airborne and landing in a ditch.

He suffered moderate injuries as a result from the crash, and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

SHOWMAN SHOWDOWN FOR CLASS 4 AND 5 BASKETBALL CANCELED

The upcoming basketball showdown for Class 4 and 5 basketball has been canceled.

This decision comes from growing concerns about the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and was backed by both school members, as well as officials on local and state levels regarding recent CDC gathering limitations.
