CENSUS DATA SHOWS POPULATION DECLINE IN MOST SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COUNTIES

The census was conducted last year and data released shows that population totals are down in most Southeast Missouri counties.

According to a report released by Dr. Mark White and the University of Missouri Extension, the US Census Bureau released population estimates from the 2020 census last month.

In Southeast Missouri, Butler County lost 1.4 percent of residents from 2010, which comes out to around 600 people. Ripley and Wayne Counties were down 5.7 percent and 5.3 percent respectively.

The bootheel was one of the areas that was hardest hit by population loss in the state. Pemiscot County population totals were down almost 15 percent, while New Madrid County was down around 12 percent, Mississippi County lost almost 11 percent, and Dunklin County was down around 10 percent.

RIVER RADIO BLOOD DRIVE SET FOR NEXT MONTH IN POPLAR BLUFF 

A date has been announced for the next River Radio Blood Drive in Poplar Bluff.

The Blood Drive has been scheduled for noon to 6 pm on Friday, July 9th at the Greater Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce.

St. Louis Cardinals T-shirts will be available while supplies last.

MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN EARLY MORNING WRECK NEAR WAPPAPELLO

An area man was injured early Monday morning in a Wayne County wreck.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 49 year old Johnny Schaefer, of Wappapello, was driving on Route Z, shortly before 5 am Monday, when his vehicle ran off the side of the road and struck a tree.

Schaefer was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital with serious injuries. 

 

BIKE TOUR TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

A bike tour is set to begin next week in Poplar Bluff.

The 2021 Bicycle Across Missouri will begin on June 14th at Ray Clinton Park in Poplar Bluff. The five day tour will take riders from Poplar Bluff to Sikeston on day 1, and then to Cape Girardeau, Perryville, Farmington, and Sainte Genevieve over the following days.

Riders will cover almost 300 miles over the entire tour. You can find more information at BigBamRide.com. 

MAN ARRESTED IN WAYNE COUNTY ON DRUG RELATED CHARGES

Authorities in Wayne County have arrested a Missouri man on drug related charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 21 year old Chance Marcum, of Mokane, Missouri, was taken into custody Sunday night on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance for methamphetamine.

Marcum is also facing charges of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and speeding. 

  

POPLAR BLUFF PARKS DEPARTMENT OFFERING SWIM LESSONS

The Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department will be offering swimming lessons this summer at the R.W. Huntington Municipal Pool.

There will be three separate two week sessions offered with both morning and evening times available. The first session will begin on June 14th.

Registration costs $20 and the registration form is available online at pbparks.org.
