ONE DEAD FOLLOWING NORTHEAST ARKANSAS WRECK

A woman has died following a wreck early Wednesday morning in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the wreck occurred at around 2:30 am Wednesday on Highway 63 in Lawrence County when a vehicle crossed into the opposite lane and struck an oncoming vehicle.

The driver of the first vehicle was killed in the wreck, and her identity has not been released.

The driver of the second vehicle was injured and transported to an area hospital. 

 

CALIFORNIA MAN SENTENCED FOR SHIPPING METH TO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A California man is facing 20 years in prison for shipping drugs to Southeast Missouri.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 36 year old Dexter Elcan, of South Gate, California, pleaded guilty in June to possession with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.

Officers from the Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force learned that Elcan was shipping methamphetamine to people in Southeast Missouri.

On the morning of July 11, 2020, officers learned that Elcan was traveling to Missouri and that he had shipped a package to a residence in Poplar Bluff. Officers went to the home where the package was delivered and knocked on the door as Elcan ran out another door and tried to escape.

He was captured a short distance away while trying to break his cell phone and burn the receipt for mailing the package. Officers recovered the package which held 446 grams of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine.

On Wednesday, Elcan was sentenced to 20 years in prison. 

 

DATE SET FOR FALL BUFF UP THE BLUFF

A date has been set for the 2021 Fall Buff up the Bluff event.

The citywide clean up event has been scheduled for Saturday, October 16th.

The Poplar Bluff Leaf Disposal Site will be accepting items from 8 am to 3:30 pm. The site is located southeast of Twin Towers and signs will be posted. Proof of city residency is required.

To arrange for curbside pickup of items for residents 65 years old and older you must call 573-686-8622 between the dates of October 11th and October 14th.

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL RECEIVES OVER $5,000 TO HELP STUDENTS PRACTICE ENGINEERING

A Poplar Bluff school has received a substantial grant to help students practice engineering.

According to school officials, the Montgomery Family Foundation, a Georgia-based philanthropy group, has donated around $5,000 to Poplar Bluff High School to purchase several robotics kits.

At the beginning of the month, seven TETRIX FIRST Tech Challenge Competition Sets, valued at about $700 apiece, were delivered to the school science department.

BUTLER COUNTY COMMUNITY OUTREACH DAY SET FOR FRIDAY

The Butler County Community Outreach Coalition is planning a big event for tomorrow.

Community Outreach Day has been scheduled for 10 am to 2 pm on Friday at First United Methodist Church in Poplar Bluff.

Community Outreach Day is described as a one stop event where individuals and families in need can access free services and events.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO FORCE CLOSURE OF PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD

Route YY in Pemiscot County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

According to officials, the work zone is located just east of County Road 209.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through 4:30 pm.
