BURN BAN ENACTED FOR WAYNE COUNTY AND WAPPAPELLO LAKE

Another Southeast Missouri county has chosen to restrict burning with the ongoing drought plaguing the area

Wayne County Clerk Kent Sisco tells KWOC News that the Wayne County Commission has enacted a burn ban until further notice.

The ban includes all outdoor burning in the county.

The US Army Corps of Engineers has also announced a burn ban for Wappapello Lake campgrounds, picnic areas, and remote accesses.

Corps officials say that the ban prohibits the use of charcoal or wood fires. Visitors to public recreation areas and campgrounds on Wappapello Lake may use attended gas grills or stove tops. All forms of fire in remote access areas are prohibited.

In Poplar Bluff, a recent fire spread to a structure and caused damage. PB Fire Department officials are encouraging people not to burn during the enhanced fire danger conditions.

Officials are also reminding motorists to not throw used cigarettes onto the ground as all it takes is a small spark that can then rapidly spread to a big fire due to dry, breezy weather conditions.

A red flag warning will be in effect today for much of Southeast Missouri.
