FIRE BURNS WILLIAMSVILLE AREA BUSINESS AND APARTMENT BUILDING

A fire damaged a Wayne County business and neighboring apartment building late Monday evening.

Wayne County Sheriff Dean Finch tells KWOC News that the fire occurred at around 9 pm Monday night at Holmes Store in Williamsville. The fire at the grocery store also spread to an apartment building. The apartment building dates back to the 1800s and the loss of Holmes Store means the closest grocery store is now approximately 25 miles away, in Poplar Bluff.

Finch says that every available firetruck in the county, along with other firefighters from Van Buren, Farmington, and Butler County assisted in putting out the fire.

Officials say no injuries have been reported and the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.

HUNTERS REMINDED TO BE AWARE OF BAITING REGULATIONS

Deer season is rapidly approaching and the Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding hunters of baiting regulations.

According to the MDC, the use of bait, including grain or other feed placed or scattered to attract deer or turkey while hunting is illegal.

Officials say the regulations are in place to help limit the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease in deer and to ensure fair chase.

Missouri voters will also be deciding on a new state auditor between Democrat Alan Green and Republican Scott Fitzpatrick. Current Missouri Auditor Nicole Galloway announced last year that she was not going to run for the seat again.

In Southeast Missouri, Incumbent Republican Jason Smith is defending his seat in the United States House of Representatives against Democratic challenger Randi McCallian.
