ALMOST ALL TOP SEEDS ADVANCE IN FIRST ROUND OF LADY ROYALS CHRISTMAS CLASSIC

The first round is done at the 25th Annual Lady Royals Christmas Classic basketball tournament.

Top seed Doniphan easily dispatched Hayti in the opening game of the tournament on Saturday 59-18.

Host Twin Rivers was sent to the consolation bracket after their 44-38 loss to Kennett.

Holcomb was the only underdog to pick up a win on Saturday, knocking off six seed Cape Central 75-50 in Overtime.

Eight more games are on the docket for today including the four quarterfinal matchups. Doniphan will take on Portageville at 3 pm, followed by Neelyville vs. Piggott at 4:30 pm, Dexter vs. Kennett at 6 PM, and East Carter vs. Holcomb at 7:30 pm.

The consolation bracket games will start at 9 am.

TYLER HANSBROUGH SELECTED TO MISSOURI SPORTS HALL OF FAME

A Poplar Bluff Mules legend has been selected for the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

Tyler Hansbrough will be inducted into the hall of fame in a ceremony on Sunday, February 5th in Springfield.

As a Mules player, he scored over 2,500 career points and brought Poplar Bluff two state championships. He was also named a McDonald’s All American.

Hansbrough then went on to play for the North Carolina Tar Heels, before moving to the NBA.

Brian Rosener, president of the Poplar Bluff Sports Hall of Fame, says that they will undoubtedly be joining the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in honoring Tyler’s legacy in the future.

PUXICO MAN DEAD FOLLOWING WRECK IN SCOTT COUNTY

An area man was killed in a wreck Thursday in Scott County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 29 year old Ryan Winingnear, of Puxico, was driving on Route HH when he struck the rear of a turning Freightliner.

Officials say the crash occurred Thursday evening, two miles north of Miner.

Winingnear was pronounced dead at the scene by Scott County Coroner Scott Branam.

BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES EXPECTED THIS WEEK

Christmas is less than a week away and Santa is bringing cooler temperatures with him.

According to the National Weather Service, below normal temperatures are expected beginning today. Very cold arctic air is expected to settle across the region beginning on Thursday and will last through Christmas.

Temperatures are expected to average around 20 degrees below normal, with the possibility of even colder temps, including lows dipping down into the single digits and wind chills getting into the negatives.

Officials say there are also chances of snowfall on Thursday.

UNITED GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION TO PROVIDE CHRISTMAS MEALS

Preparations are underway for the United Gospel Rescue Mission’s Christmas Meal.

The Rescue Mission in Poplar Bluff will be providing meals on Sunday, December 25th and is asking for support from the community.

Officials say that they need volunteers to help prepare meals every day from 9 am to noon starting on December 22nd. On Christmas Day, the Rescue Mission will also need assistance to prepare, serve, and deliver the meals.

MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL REMINDS MOTORISTS TO DRIVE SAFE OVER CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to drive safely during the Christmas holiday weekend.

Remember to check your vehicle before you travel to ensure that it is in good working condition. Make sure you are well rested before driving to your destination, no matter how short the distance.

According to the Highway Patrol, last year there were 881 traffic crashes during the Christmas counting period. In those crashes, eight people were killed and another 401 were injured.

The 2022 Christmas holiday counting period begins at 6 pm on Friday and ends at 11:59 pm on Monday, December 26th.
