DONIPHAN DONETTES WIN OFC SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Doniphan is celebrating their first conference softball championship.

The Donnettes defeated the Neelyville Lady Tigers Thursday afternoon, 11-10, to win the 2023 Ozark Foothills Conference Softball tournament at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.

Doniphan used a seventh inning comeback to avenge their loss to Neelyville in last year’s OFC Championship Game.

In the Third Place Game, Greenville defeated Twin Rivers 4-3.

MULTIPLE INJURIES REPORTED FOLLOWING SHOOTING IN POPLAR BLUFF

Multiple people were shot during an incident Thursday evening in Poplar Bluff.

Captain JR Keirsey with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that officers responded to a residence in the 400 Block of North C Street at around 6:20 pm Thursday for a report of shots fired.

As officers secured the scene, staff from the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center called and said two adult males were brought to the Emergency Room for treatment of gunshot wounds. One of the subjects was in critical condition and transported to a St Louis hospital.

The preliminary investigation determined the shooting was a result of a violent confrontation at the residence. Keirsey says that at this time a juvenile male has been identified as the person who fired the weapon.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

POPLAR BLUFF FIRE DEPARTMENT CHOSEN FOR GRANT TO PURCHASE NEW GEAR

Area first responders will be receiving grant money for various things to help serve their communities.

On Thursday, Governor Mike Parson announced that the Missouri Department of Public Safety has approved 428 grants totaling over $6.3 million to law enforcement, fire service, and EMS providers across the state for new equipment, supplies, personnel, and training.

Grant funded equipment includes patrol vehicles, mobile data terminals, firefighter turnout gear, extrication equipment, cardiac monitors, and emergency communications radios.

The Poplar Bluff Fire Department was one of the agencies chosen to receive a grant. The grant total was over $16,000.

Poplar Bluff Fire Chief Mike Moffitt says the grant money will go towards the purchase of eight new sets of turnout gear, which is the protective gear that firefighters wear inside a structure fire.

Butler County EMS will also receive a $20,000 grant.

NATIONAL DRUG TAKE BACK DAY SET FOR APRIL 22ND

Poplar Bluff residents will have a chance to safely dispose of their unused, unwanted, or expired prescription drugs this weekend.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department will be participating in National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 22nd from 10 am to 2 pm at the Poplar Bluff Police Station.

Numerous area police departments are also participating in the National Drug Take Back Day, including Doniphan, Malden, and Sikeston.

ONE IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING SHOOTING IN MISSOURI BOOTHEEL

One person has been taken into custody following a shooting in the Missouri Bootheel.

According to the Hayti Police Department, shortly after 7 pm on Wednesday, officers responded to shots being fired at “The Store.”

When officers arrived they could hear active shooting and located a wounded 18 year old victim. An officer located and engaged the suspect who immediately dropped the weapon and surrendered to police.

A 42-year-old male, from Hayti, was arrested and is being held in the Pemiscot County Jail on charges of assault first degree, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a weapon. His name was not released.

The 18 year old victim was treated and released with non-life threatening injuries. A second victim, identified as a 31 year old black male, from Hayti, was flown to a Memphis hospital in critical condition.

This incident is still under investigation, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Hayti Police Department at 573-359-6348.

SACRED HEART SCHOOL TO HOST FIESTA AUCTION

Sacred Heart School’s 26th Annual Fiesta Auction has been scheduled for this weekend.

Officials say the event will be held on Saturday at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff.

There will be both a live and a silent auction. Doors are set to open at 5 pm, with dinner beginning at 6 pm.

Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 if purchased at the door. Each ticket includes dinner and two adult beverages.

PAVEMENT STRIPING OPERATION UNDERWAY ON US ROUTE 60

U.S. Route 60 in Southeast Missouri will be reduced to one lane through the end of the month as contractor crews perform pavement striping.

The striping operation will be located from the Wright County line through Texas, Shannon, Carter, Butler and Stoddard Counties to the Scott County line.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Monday, May 1st.
