POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORE SELECTED TO ATTEND MISSOURI FINE ARTS ACADEMY

A Poplar Bluff High School sophomore will be attending a prestigious academy this summer.

According to school officials, Virginiagrace Vandewarker has been selected to participate in the Missouri Fine Arts Academy.

She is the only student from this region among 100 total across the state to attend the two-week residential program through the Reynolds College of Arts and Letters at Missouri State University in Springfield.

Participating in the vocal music area of study, Vandewarker wrote in an essay included in her portfolio, along with an audition video, about how the performing arts have helped her stay connected through the pandemic and during a move across the country.

Officials say that Vandewarker is the first qualifying student from Poplar Bluff High School in several years.

MISSOURI STATE TROOPER INJURED IN STODDARD COUNTY CRASH

A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper was injured in a two vehicle crash in Stoddard County.

According to the Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a vehicle pulled into the path of the Patrol vehicle on Highway 25 in the Dexter area.

The trooper suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a Dexter hospital. The driver of the other vehicle received minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

POPLAR BLUFF EARLY CHILDHOOD SCREENING SET FOR NEXT WEEK

The Poplar Bluff Early Childhood Center will soon host its final screening for the 2023/24 school year.

According to school officials, the final screening day will take place on Wednesday, May 31st at the 1202 Camp Road Campus.

To be eligible, children must be between the ages of three and five on July 31st, 2023.

FARM TRACTOR HIT ON BUTLER COUNTY ROADWAY, ONE INJURED

One person was injured after striking a farm tractor on a Butler County roadway.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 76 year old Carol Lawrence, of Broseley, was driving one mile west of Elk on Route CC when she struck the back of the farm equipment.

Lawrence’s vehicle was totaled and she received moderate injuries. She was taken to a Dexter hospital for treatment.

The farm equipment received moderate damage and its driver was uninjured.

PB CHRISTIAN SOCCER CAMP TO BE HELD AT BLACK RIVER SOCCER COMPLEX

The 10th Annual PB Christian Soccer Camp will be held this weekend at the Black River Soccer Complex in Poplar Bluff.

The camp is for students from kindergarten to high school and no experience is necessary. The registration fee is $65 and the camp will be held over three days from May 26th to May 28th.

Each participant will receive a shirt, water bottle, and soccer ball. Lunch will also be provided daily.

MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION OFFERING FREE MUSHROOM HUNTING CLASS

Perspective mushroom hunters will have the opportunity to learn more about finding morels this weekend.

The Missouri Department of Conservation’s free online virtual Mushroom Hunting 101 class is being offered from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, on the MDC website.

An MDC naturalist will discuss what it takes to go mushroom hunting, where to go, and which mushrooms to look for that can be served up on a dinner plate.

The class is open to participants ages 12 and older. Officials say that registration is required and you can register at mdc.mo.gov.
