MAN WHO WAS SHOT DURING ALLEGED BURGLARY ATTEMPT IN BUTLER COUNTY HAS DIED
Updating a story we brought to you earlier this week, a man who was shot during an alleged burglary attempt early Saturday morning in Butler County has died.
Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that at around 3 am Saturday morning, deputies responded to a residence on Strawberry Lane in Qulin in reference to someone being shot.
At the scene, deputies were told that an intruder had tried to break into the residence and the homeowner had shot the suspect five times.
The suspect, identified as 37 year old Darren Vennerman, of Chanute, Kansas, was flown to a Memphis hospital for treatment. Butler County Coroner Jim Akers says that Vennerman passed away Tuesday morning due to complications from the gunshot wounds.
Dobbs said that the homeowner has not been charged as they acted under Missouri’s self-defense laws.
ONE IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING FATAL SHOOTING IN NEW MADRID COUNTY
Authorities say that a suspect is in custody following a shooting in New Madrid County.
According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, shortly before 6 pm on Monday deputies responded to a call in Howardville for a woman with a gunshot wound who was not breathing.
At the scene, deputies found 45 year old Shannon Mansfield, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation led to deputies arresting 45 year old Shaundale T. Maxwell for murder 2nd degree and armed criminal action.
Maxwell is currently being held in the Mississippi County Jail with no bond.
DEPUTY CRASHES VEHICLE ON BLACK ICE
A Northeast Arkansas Sheriff’s Deputy crashed his vehicle while patrolling early Tuesday morning.
According to Greene County Sheriff Brad Snyder, at approximately 1 am Tuesday, a night shift deputy encountered black ice at the intersection of two County Roads. Due to the slick conditions, the deputy’s truck slid into the ditch.
Snyder says that the deputy was checked out at the hospital for precautionary measures and the truck sustained what appears to be minor damage to the front end.
Motorists are being reminded to watch for black ice over the coming days, especially in the morning hours.
OFFICERS RESCUE WOMAN FROM BURNING HOME IN KENNETT
Kennett Police Officers rescued a woman from a burning home on Sunday.
According to the Kennett Police Department, shortly before 6:30 pm Sunday night, the Kennett Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to a structure fire on South Hopper Street.
The caller advised officials that a wheelchair bound woman was inside the residence.
Two police officers were the first to arrive on scene and were able to make contact with the woman and carry her out to safety.
CLOSURES PLANNED FOR MINGO NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE FOR FERAL HOG CONTROL
Mingo National Wildlife Refuge will be closed for a number of days this month for animal control.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Inspection and Health Service will be conducting a multiple-day aerial operation to control feral hogs on the Wildlife Refuge through January 24th.
This management action will involve a helicopter flying over the refuge with APHIS personnel targeting and shooting feral hogs. For public safety, the entire refuge will be closed to public entry intermittently, with all roads entering the refuge closed.
This closure includes all access to the refuge including vehicle, foot, bicycle, and horseback.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS IN PRISON ON DRUG AND GUN CHARGES
A Southeast Missouri man has been sentenced to over a decade in prison on gun and drug charges.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 43 year old Christopher Calicott pleaded guilty last April to felony counts of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and possession of firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking crime.
As a part of a multi-agency investigation, authorities conducted a search of Calicott’s home near Sikeston, which resulted in the discovery of a total of 60 grams of cocaine, 247 grams of meth, 124 grams of marijuana, a 9mm semiautomatic pistol loaded with 15 rounds, a 12-gauge shotgun loaded with five shotgun shells, $6,600 in cash, and drug paraphernalia.
Both Calicott and his wife, Jodi Calicott, admitted to involvement in the drug trade and Christopher admitted to possession of the firearms.
Christopher Calicott has been sentenced to 12 years in prison on his charges.
Jodi L. Calicott was sentenced in June to five years in prison after pleading guilty to possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
