POPLAR BLUFF ALUMNUS KAMERON MISNER CALLED UP TO TAMPA BAY RAYS

A Poplar Bluff native has made it to the Major Leagues.

Kameron Misner is being called up to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Misner graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 2016, and was drafted by the Kansas City Royals, but decided to attend the University of Missouri.

He was then drafted by the Florida Marlins with the 35th overall pick in 2019 and traded to the Rays in 2021.

This year for the Rays' Triple-A affiliate, the Durham Bulls, Misner is batting .247 with 15 home runs and 45 RBI's.

The Rays will be in St. Louis to take on the Cardinals for a three game series beginning on Tuesday next week.

MISSOURI SALES TAX HOLIDAY IS THIS WEEKEND

Missouri’s annual back to school sales tax holiday is underway.

According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, the tax holiday began this morning and will run through Sunday, August 4th.

During this time, certain back-to-school purchases such as school supplies, computers, clothing and other qualifying items as defined by statute are exempt from all state and local sales tax or use tax taxes.

Eligible items include clothing that does not have a taxable value of more than $100 and personal computers that do not cost more than $1,500, among other items.

COMPETITIVE LOCAL RACES IN WAYNE COUNTY

Wayne County is our focus for today as we look at local races that will be decided during the primary election next week.

There are two competitive races for Republican nominations.

In the first, Sheriff Dean Finch is facing three challengers for his seat, Kyle Shearrer, Jordan Ottwell, and Shane Babb.

Incumbent Beverly Finch is being challenged by Frances Huitt for the Republican nomination for county Assessor.

There are no competitive races for the Democratic Party.

COMPETITIVE RACES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

We are less than a week away from the Missouri Primary and there are interesting races shaping up.

For the Republican nomination for Missouri District 8 in the United States House of Representatives, Jason Smith is facing challengers James Snider and Grant Heithold. For the Democratic nomination for the seat, Randi McCallian will take on Franklin Roth II.

For Missouri Circuit 35 Judge, Daren Keith Todd will face off with Robert Mayer for the Republican nomination.

In the Missouri House of Representatives, Joe Loyd, Tony Harbison, and Paul Usher are battling for the nomination for the 144th District. The 153rd District will see Vinnie Clubb take on Keith Elliott.

SCHOOL BUS DRIVER TRAINING SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

School bus drivers will have a chance to get training today in Poplar Bluff.

According to school officials, Poplar Bluff schools will be hosting bus driver training today at the Kay Porter Theater.

Training will be provided by the Missouri United School Insurance Council from 9 a.m. to noon and the Transportation Security Administration from 1 to 3 p.m.

The training is open to bus drivers throughout the region, or any school drivers with “S” endorsements. For more information, call 314-800-2255.

SEAL COAT OPERATIONS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY IN CARTER COUNTY

Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be making driving surface improvements on Route K in Carter and Oregon Counties.

The work zone is located from Route J in Carter County to the end of state maintenance in Oregon County. A 12-foot width restriction will be in place while work is underway.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Tuesday, August 6th from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
