STUDENT DETAINED AFTER BEING FOUND WITH A HANDGUN ON A SCHOOL BUS

An area student has been detained after being found with a handgun on a school bus.

In a statement released Monday night, Twin Rivers R-10 Superintendent Rob Brown says that Monday afternoon a Twin Rivers school bus carrying the 5th and 6th grade boys and girls basketball teams was travelling to Naylor High School when a student reported to a staff member that another student had a handgun in their duffle bag.

The coaching staff immediately gained possession of the duffle bag and confirmed that a gun was inside the bag. The staff contacted school administration and the Ripley County Sheriff’s Department, requesting that a deputy meet the bus at Naylor High School.

The deputy and juvenile officer confiscated the handgun and took statements. The student was transported to the Stoddard County Juvenile Detention Center.

Brown says that the top priority of the Twin Rivers administration is the safety of the students and staff. Brown is commending the members of the coaching staff and the bus driver for their actions during this incident.

Anyone who has questions is asked to contact the Central Office at 573-328-4321.
