STATE OFFICIALS STRESS IMPORTANCE OF BUCKLING CHILDREN IN AGE APPROPRIATE SAFETY SEAT
State officials are urging parents to remember to buckle their children in an age appropriate safety seat.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation and Department of Health and Senior Services, car crashes are a leading cause of death for children one to 13 years old.
In 2016, 18 children less than eight years of age were killed and 47 suffered serious injuries in motor vehicle crashes in Missouri. Twenty-nine percent of the children killed were not restrained in a car seat or safety belt. Motor vehicle crashes were also responsible for 8 maternal deaths that year in Missouri.
MoDHSS Director, Dr. Randall Williams says that everyone, including pregnant women and children, should use safety belts or car seats every time they ride in a motor vehicle.
