VOTING ON USE TAX FOR POPLAR BLUFF FAILING MIGHT LEAD TO LAYOFFS 

The recent voting on a use tax for Poplar Bluff on Tuesday failed with 276 for the tax and 491 against. 

The tax, if passed, was going to be used on specific out of state online purchases for the same rate they would be taxed if bought from businesses. 

City Manager Mark Massingham tells KWOC News that the 2020 general fund budget cannot include pay raises for employees due to this, and that it is possible some layoff’s will occur.

TWO DUNKLIN COUNTY RESIDENTS ARRESTED ON DRUG AND FIREARM CHARGES  

Two Dunklin County Residents were taken into custody on Tuesday on drug and firearm charges. 

The Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney Office states that 54 year old Steve Bowen, and 39 year old Carrie Wimberley, of Arbyrd, have been arrested on delivery of a controlled substance, unlawful use of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm. 

They are both being held with a cash only bond, Bowen with a bond of $70,000, and Wimberley with a bond of $60,000.

CREEKS CLOSING DUE TO UPCOMING DUCK SEASON 

Some Creeks will be closing this week due to the upcoming duck hunting season. 

Wappapello Lake U.S. Army Corps of Engineers state that Asher Creek, near Stoddard County, and Lost Creek Wildlife Refuges will be closed to vehicle and boat traffic during this time. 

They will close officially on Saturday, and will open again on January 12th. For more information, contact the Lake Management office at 573-222-8562.

INCOMING STORM SYSTEM BRINGS WITH IT CHANCE OF HEAVY RAINFALL 

An incoming storm system is bringing with it the chance of heavy rainfall.  

According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service, thunderstorms are possible with increasing rain chances later today and tonight. 

Heavy rainfall will be the primary storm related hazard through the period. Weather officials say up to 3 inches of rain is likely with this storm system, along with isolated flooding being a concern. 

The chances of heavy rain are also expected to continue into Thursday.

WOMAN IN NEW MADRID COUNTY ARRESTED ON METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGE 

A woman has been taken into custody in New Madrid County on methamphetamine possession charges. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 31 year old Kyla Miller, of Morely, was arrested for felony possession of controlled substance – methamphetamine. 

She was also charged for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. 

Miller was transported to the New Madrid Jail following her arrest.

MULTIPLE VEHICLE CRASH IN RIPLEY COUNTY LEADS TO MULTIPLE INJURIES 

Two people sustained minor injuries in a wreck involving three vehicles in Ripley County.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 6:15 am Tuesday on Highway 160 near Doniphan. A vehicle struck a deer, causing it to cross the center of the roadway and struck another vehicle which caused a third vehicle to collide with them. 

Two of the drivers received minor injuries, and both were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.
