CITY OF POPLAR BLUFF ATTEMPTING TO PASS USE TAX
The city of Poplar Bluff will be attempting to pass a use tax in a few months.
The use tax will be collected on items purchased and shipped into the state, the prime example being online purchases. City manager Mark Massingham states that the tax will be at the same sales tax rate that would normally be applied to in-city purchases.
This will be the fourth attempt the city will make to pass the use tax, and the estimated income would be around $350,000, which will go directly to the city’s general revenue fund to pay for salary and benefit expenses for departments such as police, fire departments, and other expenses included in the city budget.
FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND IN BUTLER COUNTY
A flood watch has been set to be put in effect today through Saturday.
Periods of heavy rainfall is expected from Friday through Saturday, likely ranging to a total of 3 to 5 inches of rain, which is expected to cause rapid rises in creeks and streams. Low water crossings are also expected to become impassable.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol urges both drivers and residents to keep an eye on their local forecast, and track rain activity in the case of flash flooding.
AG EXPO 2020 TO BE HELD ON JANUARY 31st AND FEBRUARY 1st
We are less than one month away from Ag Expo 2020.
This year’s Ag Expo will be held on January 31st and February 1st at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff. There will be over 100 agriculture related booths and exhibits at the expo along with many activities for the whole family.
Other events will include the beauty pageant, FFA tractor driving contest, petting farm, old time auction, and cow milking contest.
Admission will be $2 for adults and free for all college students and youth.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FACING 20 YEARS FOR DRUG AND WEAPON CHARGES
A Poplar Bluff man is facing 20 years in federal prison on several drug and weapon charges.
According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, Payten Ice faces charges after pleading guilty to three felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute – methamphetamine charges, several distribution of methamphetamine charges, and possession of firearm charges.
His sentencing is scheduled for March 31st.
INJURIES REPORTED FOLLOWING VEHICLE CRASH IN DUNKLIN COUNTY
Injuries have been reported following a vehicle collision in Dunklin County on Thursday.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at Missouri 25 at US 62, where a vehicle pulled into the path of another vehicle, and was struck by the oncoming vehicle.
The drivers of both vehicles received moderate injuries as a result of the collision, and were transported to a hospital in Poplar Bluff, and Dexter.
MARTIN LUTHER KING EVENT BEING HELD IN POPLAR BLUFF
A Martin Luther King event will be held at a local school in Poplar Bluff.
The “King’s Dream for Our World” service event is scheduled to be held at the historic Wheatley school on Garfield Street in Poplar Bluff .
The event will have speaker Mareece Webb, an active member in several youth and church programs, and will be held on January 20th, at 11 am.
