MULTIPLE BASKETBALL DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS HELD THURSDAY NIGHT

Multiple district basketball champions were crowned last night in Southeast Missouri.

Starting with the Girls Class 2, Holcomb defeated Hayti 64-44 to win District 1, while Ellington beat Neelyville 60-55 in District 2. In the Girls Class 3 District 1 finals, Twin Rivers claimed the district championship after their 51-37 victory over Thayer. In the Class 3, District 2 final, Woodland beat Scott City 66-48.

On the boys’ side, Gideon defeated Scott County Central 61 to 55 to win Class 1, District 1. For Class 2, District 1, Campbell was victorious over Bernie 55-41. In Class 2, District 2, Alton defeated Van Buren, 52-37.

State sectional play for the boys will begin on March 2nd, with the girls following on March 3rd. 


MISSOURI TO ACTIVATE NEXT PHASE OF COVID VACCINATIONS ON MARCH 15TH

The state of Missouri will enter the next phase of the Covid-19 vaccine rollout midway through next month.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson announced yesterday that Phase 1B - Tier 3 of the state’s COVID-19 Vaccine Plan will be activated on Monday, March 15th.

Beginning that day, Missourians in Phase 1B - Tier 3 will be eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. This includes K-12 educators and school employees; child care providers; grocery store employees; and energy, food, agriculture, and other critical infrastructure workers, among others.

Approximately 550,000 more Missourians will be eligible for the vaccine. Missourians in Phase 1A and Phase 1B - Tier 1 and Tier 2 will also remain eligible.

FIRE BURNS KENNETT AREA BUSINESS

A fire damaged a Dunklin County business on Wednesday.

Officials with the Kennett Fire Department tell KWOC News that the fire occurred at around 11 pm Wednesday night at the Plaza Tire Service in Kennett.

The fire spread from an area outside the business to portions inside.

Officials say that no one was injured and the Kennett Fire Department and Missouri State Fire Marshal's office are investigating. 

  

MAN ARRESTED IN RIPLEY COUNTY ON CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND DRUG CHARGES

Authorities in Ripley County have arrested a Fairdealing man on a child pornography charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 27 year old Cameron Sanders was taken into custody Thursday afternoon on charges of possession of child pornography, possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Sanders was held at the Ripley County Jail. 

 

MULTIPLE AREA PUBLIC HOUSING AUTHORITIES RECEIVE GRANT MONEY FROM FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

Multiple Public Housing Authorities in Southeast Missouri have been approved for grant money from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The grants announced this week are provided through HUD's Capital Fund Program, which offers annual funding to all public housing authorities to build, renovate, and/or modernize the public housing in their communities.

Poplar Bluff was approved for over 1.3 million dollars, Kennett 778 thousand dollars, Dexter 275 thousand dollars, and Campbell 103 thousand dollars, among others. 


SEVEN INJURED IN IN WRECK ON INTERSTATE 55

Numerous people were injured during a two vehicle wreck Thursday morning on Interstate 55.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred when a vehicle struck another vehicle in the rear at the 88.2 mile marker.

Officials say that a total of seven people, including three children, suffered minor or moderate injuries. They were all transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.
