MANY SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SCHOOLS TO RETURN TO CLASS TODAY
Numerous schools around Southeast Missouri are set to return to classes today.
At least 15 school districts will hold their first day of school today, including Poplar Bluff, Bernie, Campbell, Clarkton, Doniphan, East Carter County, Holcomb, Kennett, Malden, Naylor, Neelyville, Richland, Senath-Hornersville, and Twin Rivers.
More area school districts will begin classes on Tuesday, including Bell City, Clearwater, Ripley County R-4, and Southland.
MOTORISTS ASKED TO WATCH FOR STUDENTS ON THE ROADWAYS
With students returning to school in Southeast Missouri this week, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to watch for students.
Drivers should expect a change in traffic patterns ─ school buses and parents taking their children to school and many young drivers will join other motorists on the road and affect the morning and afternoon commute. Also expect an increase in pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about riding a bus, walking, or driving to school in a safe manner. If they ride a bike, please make sure they wear a helmet and follow traffic laws.
HEAT ADVISORY TO BE IN EFFECT FOR MOST OF THIS WEEK
Another heatwave will be crossing the area throughout this week.
According to the National Weather Service a heat advisory will be in effect for most of Southeast Missouri beginning at noon today and continuing until 7 pm on Thursday.
Officials say that daily heat index values of 100 to 108 are expected due to hot temperatures and high humidity.
Remember to take extra precautions if you plan to work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours.
ONE KILLED IN ATV CRASH IN PEMISCOT COUNTY
A Portageville man has died following an ATV wreck over the weekend.
According to authorities, 64 year old Mark Turner was driving the ATV Saturday evening on Pemiscot County Road 318, when the vehicle travelled off the roadway, struck a ditch embankment, and overturned.
Turner was pronounced dead at the scene by Pemiscot County Coroner Jim Brimhall.
WOMAN’S DEATH UNDER INVESTIGATION IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS
Officials with the Arkansas State Police are investigating a woman’s death in Northeast Arkansas.
According to the ASP, at around 3:15 am Saturday morning, Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies and local police officers entered the home of 44 year old Jennifer Shirley, near Walnut Ridge, to confirm the woman’s wellbeing.
Shirley was found inside the residence holding a gun. She had agreed to set the gun aside when an officer fired a less than lethal device at the woman, who then grabbed the gun and began shooting.
The officers reported that they did not return fire and escaped the house uninjured. A perimeter was set up outside the home and officials established a line of communication with Shirley.
Shortly after 7 am, emergency responders entered the home after smoke was seen coming from the house. Shirley was found dead inside the home and her body was transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to determine the cause of death.
ELLINGTON MAN DEAD FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK
One person is dead in connection to a single vehicle wreck in Southeast Missouri.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 34 year old Joseph Miller, of Ellington, was driving a truck on Missouri Highway HH in Reynolds County when the vehicle ran off the side of the road and struck a tree.
Miller was pronounced dead at the scene.
