POPLAR BLUFF SHOWDOWN TO BEGIN ON WEDNESDAY

We are just one day away from the 35th Annual Poplar Bluff Showdown.

The three day tournament will begin on Wednesday at Poplar Bluff High School.

The first round will see Little Rock Christian take on Haywood at 4 pm, followed by Blytheville vs. Hillcrest at 5:30 pm, Poplar Bluff against Douglass at 7 pm, and the day will finish with Springdale vs. Germantown at 8:30 pm.

The Slam Dunk and 3-Point Contests will begin at 10 am on Thursday.

Today’s Talk KWOC will have live video coverage, with commentary, for all 12 games, along with the 3 Point and Slam Dunk Contests, on our Facebook and Youtube pages during the Showdown.

Live audio coverage of every Poplar Bluff Mules game, as well as the tournament championship game, will also be broadcast on 93.3 FM, 930 AM, and at KWOC.com. 

 

BLOOD DRIVE SET FOR DECEMBER 29TH IN POPLAR BLUFF

A blood drive has been scheduled for this week in Poplar Bluff.

The Paws and Pints blood drive will be held from 12:30 to 5:30 pm on Thursday, December 29th at the Black River Coliseum.

If you donate during the Blood Drive, you will receive a new long-sleeved Red-Cross T-Shirt, while supplies last.

You can reserve an appointment time to donate by going online to RedCrossBlood.org.  

 

DONATE A COAT TO HELP KEEP AREA CHILDREN WARM THIS WINTER

An effort to gather coats for area children continues this week.

You can drop off any new or gently used coats, gloves, hats, and scarves at any Grateful Headz store.

All items donated will then be donated to the Child Concern Center so they can be distributed to families in extreme need.

Sizes from newborn to adult 3x will be accepted. The coat drive will run from through December 31st.  

US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS ACCEPTING CHRISTMAS TREES FOR RECYCLING

If you are still wondering what to do with your Christmas tree, the US Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake would like to hear from you.

The Corps of Engineers is accepting Christmas trees through January 16th at the Redman Creek boat ramp. The drop-off location is marked with a sign.

Officials say that once the trees are deposited at the collection site, they become property of the Corps of Engineers for use in establishing fish shelters and small game habitats.

OFFICIALS ENCOURAGING MOTORISTS TO BE SAFE WHILE CELEBRATING THE NEW YEAR

The New Year is quickly approaching and officials are reminding everyone who is planning to get out and celebrate this weekend to drive safely.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, during the 2022 New Year’s period, one person was killed and 331 were injured in 1,045 traffic crashes in Missouri. 

If you are driving to a New Year’s gathering, remember to buckle up and obey all traffic laws. If your plans include alcohol, remember to designate a sober driver or take a ride service to get home safely.

The 2023 New Year’s holiday counting period begins at 6 p.m. on Friday and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, January 2nd.

The public is encouraged to call the Patrol's Emergency Assistance Number (800) 525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone if they witness criminal activity or experience an emergency. 

 

REGISTRATION FOR YOUTH BASKETBALL UNDERWAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

Time is running out for parents to get their kids registered for youth basketball in Poplar Bluff.

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, youth basketball registration is underway for children in Kindergarten as well as 5th and 6th grades.

Kindergarten games will be played at First United Methodist Church in January, while 5th and 6th grade games will be played at the Poplar Bluff Middle School starting in February. The registration deadline for Kindergarten is December 29th. The 5th and 6th grade registration deadline is January 6th.

The cost to register is $20, which includes a T-shirt. Registration forms are available at the Parks and Recreation office on North Second Street and online at pbparks.org.
