BE SURE TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM TICKS
With spring in full swing, remember to protect yourself from ticks.
According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services there are several steps you can take to protect yourselves from ticks and tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
You can start by avoiding brushy or wooded areas and remember to use insect repellent. Also clear tall grass and brush from around your home.
After being outdoors, take a shower and check yourself for any ticks. If you do find one, remove it immediately.
Using tweezers or commercial tick removal tools is preferred to reduce the chance of disease transmission.
The key to using tweezers correctly is to position the tips of tweezers around the area where the tick's mouthparts enter the skin. Then use a slow, steady motion when pulling the tick away from the skin.
After removing the tick, disinfect the skin with soap and water, or other available disinfectants.
