POPLAR BLUFF POLICE CHIEF ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

The Poplar Bluff Police Chief will be stepping down in September.

On Tuesday, Chief of Police Danny Whiteley announced his retirement, ending a term of over 22 years as the head of the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

Whiteley says that he owes his success to the staff of men and women Law Enforcement Professionals of the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

Poplar Bluff City Manager Matt Winters says that Whiteley has shown an unwavering commitment to our city and developed partnerships throughout the region to address challenging public safety concerns.

Poplar Bluff Mayor Steve Davis says that Whiteley brought our law enforcement into the 21st century.

Whiteley’s retirement will be effective on September 9th. No information has been released about a possible replacement. 

MAN IN CUSTODY AFTER ATTACKING SHERIFF’S HOME WITH EXPLOSIVE DEVICE AND FIRING AT DEPUTIES

A man has been taken into custody after allegedly attacking a Northeast Arkansas Sheriff’s home and firing at deputies.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 40 year old Bryan Rogers, of Biggers, reportedly threw what was described as a crude explosive device towards the home of Randolph County Sheriff Kevin Bell early Monday morning.

Rogers, who was free on bond after being arrested recently on numerous felony charges, fled from the property while Sheriff Bell extinguished the fire.

A short time later deputies from Randolph and Lawrence County attempted to stop Rogers on US Highway 62 when Rogers began firing a gun at the deputies.

Rogers was taken into custody following an almost 20 minute pursuit. No one was injured in the incident.

Rogers is being held at the Lawrence County Jail while state police conduct an investigation.

14TH ANNUAL MULE SKINNER GOLF TOURNAMENT SET FOR AUGUST

The 14th Annual Mule Skinner Golf Tournament is coming up in August.

The 4 person scramble tournament will be held on Friday, August 5th at the Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff. Check in time is 11:30 am with a shotgun start at 1 pm.

Organizers say the entry fee is $600 per team, which includes a cart and lunch. Hole sponsorships are available for $100 per hole.

All proceeds will go to benefit Poplar Bluff Mules athletics programs.

OVER 50 PINTS OF BLOOD COLLECTED DURING RIVER RADIO BLOOD DRIVE

Residents from the Poplar Bluff area donated over 50 pints of blood during the recent River Radio Blood Drive.

According to officials with the Red Cross, a total of 53 pints of blood were collected from 50 donors during the Blood Drive, on Friday, July 8th. There were six first time donors who participated.

The donations will allow a potential of 159 hospital patients to receive life saving transfusions. 

JOHN J PERSHING VA MEDICAL CENTER DEMOLISHING BUILDING TO ADD MORE PARKING

Upgrades are coming to the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.

Project Engineer Frances Chronister says that work is ongoing to demolish the campus’ old MRI building and renovate the area adjacent to the north entrance of the main building.

Chronister says that once the work is complete, they will open up a few more handicap-accessible parking spaces for Veterans.

While the north entrance remains open while construction continues, Veterans are encouraged to use the south entrance to avoid any congestion.

MISSOURI COALITION FOR ROADWAY SAFETY IS SEEKING HIGHWAY SAFETY HERO NOMINATIONS

The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety is accepting nominations for individuals, organizations, and events to be recognized for their efforts in making roadways safer.

There are multiple statewide awards along with one award for each of the seven coalition regions.

Nicole Hood with the Missouri Department of Transportation tells KWOC News that this is an opportunity to recognize those who are helping to save lives.

Nominations are due by August 10th and the winners will be recognized at the 2022 Missouri Highway Safety and Traffic Conference in Columbia at the end of September.
