HEAT ADVISORY TO GO INTO EFFECT AT NOON TODAY

A heat advisory is scheduled to go into effect at noon today.

Officials with the National Weather Service tell us that a heat advisory will be in effect from noon today to 8 pm on Sunday as hot temperatures and high humidity will increase the chances for heat illnesses to occur.

Heat Index values are expected to get up to around 108 degrees.

Remember to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun as much as possible, and check up on your relatives and neighbors.

NAMES RELEASED OF PEOPLE INVOLVED IN BOLLINGER COUNTY HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION

Updating a story we brought to you earlier this week, officials have released the names of two individuals that were taken into custody as a part of a homicide investigation in Bollinger County.

Sheriff Casey Graham tells us that the investigation revealed that 31 year old Devon Matlock, of Farmington, was shot at a residence on State Highway JJ. Matlock was then transported to a business in Marble Hill, where he was later found by deputies on Tuesday.

Matlock was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation led officers to a residence where two subjects were arrested. The subjects, James Primer and Angela Thompson, of Marble Hill, have both been charged with murder 1st degree and armed criminal action.

Their bonds were each set at one million dollars, cash only. 

MISSOURI GOVERNOR SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER TO ACCELERATE DROUGHT RESPONSE ACTIONS

Missouri’s Governor has signed an executive order to accelerate the state’s response to the ongoing drought conditions, especially in the southern part of the state.

Governor Mike Parson issued Executive Order 22-04 calling upon the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to activate the Drought Assessment Committee and the associated drought impact teams.

The Executive Order declares a drought alert for 53 counties in southern and central Missouri. A drought alert, part of Missouri’s Drought Plan, is the initial catalyst that allows the Governor to direct state agencies to work together and provide as many resources and as much assistance as possible.

According to the US Drought Monitor, portions of Carter, Ripley, Oregon, and Shannon County are currently experiencing extreme drought. Most of the rest of Southeast Missouri is classified as in a moderate or severe drought. 

FREE ATHLETE PHYSICALS SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff High School and Junior High student athletes can get a free physical done next week at the High School.

Physicals will be conducted beginning at 5:30 pm on Thursday, July 28th for athletes in the 7th and 8th grades, beginning at 6:30 pm for 9th and 10th grades, and beginning at 7:30 pm for 11th and 12th grades.

Poplar Bluff Athletic Director Kent Keith tells us that the first practice day for fall high school sports is set for Monday, August 8th. Junior High sports will follow a week later, on Monday, August 15th. 

COLLISION NEAR PORTAGEVILLE SENDS THREE PEOPLE TO THE HOSPITAL

A two vehicle collision near Portageville resulted in injuries to three people.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred Wednesday night when a vehicle pulled into the path of another vehicle on US Highway 162.

The driver of the first vehicle, 27 year old Jameka Smith, of New Madrid, suffered serious injuries and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

Two passengers in Smith’s vehicle received minor injuries and were transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

No injuries were listed for the occupants of the second vehicle. 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON FELONY METH CHARGE

A Poplar Bluff man was arrested this week on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 31 year old Joseph Chaney was taken into custody Wednesday night in Iron County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Chaney is also facing a charge of driving while suspended.

Following the arrest, he was transported to the Iron County Jail.
