WINTER STORM WARNING TO GO INTO EFFECT TONIGHT FOR PARTS OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Portions of Southeast Missouri will be under a Winter Storm Warning tonight.

According to the National Weather Service, areas in western and northern Southeast Missouri are expected to see heavy snowfall tonight and tomorrow morning.

Total snow accumulations of four or more inches are possible in some areas, with the hazardous conditions impacting the Wednesday morning commute.

Weather officials say that winds will also be rather strong and gusty which could stress power lines. 


REMAINS OF MISSING MAN FOUND IN PORTAGEVILLE

An investigation is underway following the discovery of human remains in Southeast Missouri.

According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, on Sunday New Madrid County investigators were notified by officers of the Portageville Police Department that remains were located in an unused portion of a warehouse in Portageville.

New Madrid County Sheriff William Cooper tells KWOC News that the remains have been identified as Butch Swofford, who went missing in November of 2020.

Cooper added that no cause or manner of death is being released at this time, and an autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.


POLICE INVESTIGATING DOUBLE HOMICIDE

An area police department is asking for the public’s assistance in a double homicide investigation.

According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred Sunday morning at around 3 am in the 800 block of Southwest Street.

Police were dispatched to the area after receiving a report of multiple shots being fired.

At the scene, officers found a married couple with gunshot wounds. EMS responded for life-saving measures, but the 33 year old man died on the scene. The female was transported to a local hospital where she also died. 

The identity of the victims was not released.

PUXICO WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN HEAD ON COLLISION

A Puxico woman was injured Friday night in a head on collision.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 51 year old Anna Reddick was driving on a Stoddard County road near Puxico when her vehicle crossed the centerline of the roadway and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.

Reddick suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the second vehicle. 


OVER 20 MILLION DOLLARS IN GRANT MONEY AWARDED FOR BROADBAND PROJECTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Southeast Missouri will be getting a part of over $200 million dollars for broadband infrastructure.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson tells KWOC News that the Department of Economic Development has awarded a total of $261 million through the ARPA Broadband Infrastructure Grant Program to 60 recipients for projects that will expand and improve internet access statewide.

In Southeast Missouri, SEMO Electric Cooperative will receive over 16 million dollars for three projects in Butler and Stoddard counties. PD Fiber, LLC will get over 4 million dollars for two projects in Butler and Dunklin counties.

In Wayne County, Conexon Connect, LLC will get just under 7 million dollars for a single project.

Parson says the program prioritized unserved and underserved areas. Funds will be used to build new connections that will deliver symmetrical speeds of 100 megabits per second upload and download or greater.


POPLAR BLUFF FIREFIGHTER RECOGNIZED FOR HIS ACTIONS IN SAVING A PERSON FROM A STRUCTURE FIRE

A Poplar Bluff firefighter has been recognized for his actions during a recent structure fire.

According to the Poplar Bluff Fire Department, Captain Brad Jones received a commendation from the fire department last week.

Shortly before 2 am on January 11th, the PBFD was dispatched to a reported structure fire with someone still in the structure. Jones made entry into the burning structure, located the disoriented occupant, and helped the occupant out of the structure.

Family members told Jones that they were trying to get the occupant into a care facility due to health issues, but they were unable to find one that would accept her.

Officials say that the next day Jones made some calls and found a facility that would accept her.

The Poplar Bluff Fire Department has announced that Captain Jones went above and beyond his call of duty to help the family, and for that they would like to commend him for his actions.
