POPLAR BLUFF COMPETITIVE CHEERLEADERS COMPETE IN NATIONAL COMPETITION

The Poplar Bluff High School Competitive Cheerleading team was in Texas this past weekend to compete with the top High School cheer teams from across the United States.

The Mules Cheerleaders took part in the National Cheerleaders Association High School Nationals in Dallas, Texas in the Intermediate Small Varsity Crowd Performance division. 

Poplar Bluff finished day one of the competition in 17th place out of 28 teams.

Following their performance on day 2, the Mules Cheerleading squad improved on their prior position, finishing in 14th place. 

FIVE SOUTHEAST MISSOURI PRISON ESCAPEES BACK IN CUSTODY, ONE FOUND IN POPLAR BLUFF

The five prisoners who escaped from the St. Francois County Detention Center in Farmington have been apprehended, including one who was found in Poplar Bluff.

Police Chief Mike McClain tells KWOC News that Michael Dean Wilkins was taken into custody without incident Friday morning at a Poplar Bluff area business.

Patrolman Richie Phillips received information that Wilkins was possibly at the business. Phillips relayed the information to other officers and Lieutenant Joe Ward and Patrolman Selena Torres arrived on-scene and took Wilkins into custody.

Chief McClain added, “I am immensely proud of the quick actions taken by these officers. Their actions and teamwork mindset ensured that Wilkins is back where he belongs.”

According to the St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department, LuJuan Tucker, Aaron Sebastian, Dakota Pace, and Kelly McSean were located and taken into custody in Ohio. 

WINTER STORM WATCH TO BE IN EFFECT STARTING TOMORROW FOR MULTIPLE SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COUNTIES

A winter storm watch will go into effect tomorrow for multiple southeast Missouri communities.

According to the National Weather Service, the winter storm watch will cover numerous counties, including Carter, Wayne, Reynolds, Iron, Madison, and Bollinger Counties.

Heavy snow will be possible from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning, with total accumulations of over four inches possible.

Officials say that winds will also be rather strong and gusty. The combination of gusty winds and heavy wet snow could stress power lines.

EAGLE DAYS PROGRAM SET FOR EARLY NEXT MONTH AT MINGO NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

A day for honoring eagles has been scheduled for next month at Mingo National Wildlife Refuge near Puxico.

According to officials, the Wildlife Refuge, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and the Wappapello Lake Army Corps of Engineers will be hosting Eagle Days 2023 on Saturday, February 4th.

There will be live eagle programs at the Puxico Activity Center starting at 8:30 am.

The Puxico Activity Center is adjacent to Puxico High School, just off Highway 51.

In addition, there will be exhibits and other activities in the Visitor Center and spotting scopes will be set up on several active eagle nests around Mingo, the Duck Creek Conservation Area, and Wappapello Lake.

BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT SCHEDULED FOR WAYNE COUNTY

Route 34 in Wayne County will be closed over the next week as contractor crews replace the bridge over the Black River.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway to be closed is located between County Road 453 and County Road 459 near Leeper.

Weather permitting, work will begin today with completion anticipated by Tuesday, January 31st.  

DRAINAGE REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS ON BUSINESS 60 IN DEXTER

Business 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane for two days this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform drainage work.  

The section of roadway is located from Route AD to One Mile Road in Dexter.  

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. both today and Friday.
