BUNKER MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE

A Bunker man has been sentenced to multiple years in prison in connection to a 2018 death.

According to Missouri Case net, Rickey Holt pled guilty on Wednesday to a felony charge of 1st degree involuntary manslaughter.

Holt was arrested in June of 2018 following the death of 41 year old Joe Girard, of Oak Ridge, at Brick’s Off Road Park.

He was sentenced on Wednesday to eight years in prison to run concurrent with any existing sentence he is currently serving. He was also given credit for time served. 

CLOSURES PLANNED FOR MINGO NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE FOR FERAL HOG CONTROL

Mingo National Wildlife Refuge will be closed for a number of days this month for animal control.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Inspection and Health Service will be conducting a multiple-day aerial operation to control feral hogs on the Wildlife Refuge between January 16th and 21st.

This management action will involve a helicopter flying over the refuge with APHIS personnel targeting and shooting feral hogs. For public safety, the entire refuge will be closed to public entry intermittently, with all roads entering the refuge closed.

This closure includes all access to the refuge including vehicle, foot, bicycle, and horseback.

MARATHON SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY TO RAISE MONEY FOR CHILD BATTLING LEUKEMIA

A marathon will be held in February to support a child who is fighting cancer.

The Lace up for Lawson run and walk has been scheduled for Saturday, February 11th at McLane Park in Poplar Bluff.

Registration will begin at 8 am, with a one mile run or walk starting at 8:30 am. The 5k, 10k, half, and full marathon will begin at 9 am.

All proceeds from the event will go to support Lawson Lunsford in his battle against leukemia.

DEADLINE IS TODAY TO REGISTER FOR YOUTH BASKETBALL IN POPLAR BLUFF

Time is running out for parents to get their kids registered for youth basketball in Poplar Bluff.

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, today is the final day to register for 5th and 6th grades youth basketball.

Games will be played at the Poplar Bluff Middle School starting in February.

The cost to register is $20, which includes a T-shirt. Registration forms are available at the Parks and Recreation office on North Second Street and online at pbparks.org. 


BULKY ITEM PICK UP TO BE CONDUCTED NEXT WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff officials are reminding city residents that the city offers bulky item pickups once a month.

Residents can purchase bulk item tags from the city collector’s office at city hall for $20. The tags entitle you to the removal of four bulk items, such as couches or refrigerators. Tires may be collected for a charge of $3 per tire with a limit of four tires.

No construction materials or small items will be picked up and the program is for residential areas only.

Today is the final day this month to purchase item tags to be included in next week’s pick up, which will be conducted on January 10th.

MULTIPLE SOUTHEAST MISSOURI PROJECTS SELECTED UNDER COST-SHARE PROGRAM

Earlier this week, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission approved the funding of 28 local transportation projects using 75 million dollars in budget stabilization funds under Governor Mike Parson’s Transportation Cost-Share Program.

In Southeast Missouri, over 822 thousand dollars will go to Pemiscot County for a bridge widening project on Route 84 and over 870 thousand dollars will go to the city of New Madrid for road improvements.

The Missouri Department of Transportation and Missouri Department of Economic Development selected the projects with the goal of building partnerships with local entities to deliver road and bridge projects that have the greatest economic benefit to the state.
