36TH ANNUAL POPLAR BLUFF SHOWDOWN TIPS OFF THIS WEEK
The 36th Annual Poplar Bluff Showdown will tip off this week.
The three day tournament will start on Thursday at Poplar Bluff High School.
The first round will see McCracken County take on Vilonia at 4 pm, followed by New Madrid County Central vs. Germantown at 5:30 pm, Poplar Bluff against Memphis East at 7 pm, and the day will finish with Christian Brothers vs. Urbana at 8:30 pm.
Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith tells KWOC News that tickets are on sale for eight dollars per day.
Every game of the 36th Annual Poplar Bluff Showdown will be broadcast live on Facebook.com/TodaysTalkKWOC and youtube.com/RiverRadioPB. Live audio coverage will also be provided for every Poplar Bluff game on Today’s Talk KWOC 93.3 FM and 930 AM.
COOKING FIRE RESULTS IN ONE DEATH IN MISSOURI BOOTHEEL
One person has died in connection to a cooking fire in Kennett.
According to the Kennett Fire Department, shortly before 10 am Saturday morning, dispatch received an emergency call about a structure fire on Highway 412 West.
At the scene, firefighters entered the structure and found one person inside.
The subject, identified as Rowena Skelton, was transported to a local hospital where she later died from injuries she received during the fire.
Officials say that the fire was accidental and has been classified as an unattended cooking fire by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
FILING TO END TODAY FOR TWO POSITIONS ON THE POPLAR BLUFF R-1 SCHOOL BOARD
Filing will come to an end today for multiple positions on the Poplar Bluff R-1 Board of Education.
According to school officials, there are two positions available for three year terms that will be voted on during the election on April 2nd, 2024. The elections will be for the seats currently held by Ken Davis and Tim Gaebler, whose terms are expiring.
Candidates can file in person with the Secretary of the Board of Education at the School Administration Office.
The deadline to file for the election is 5 pm this evening. The candidate’s names will be placed on the ballot in order of filing.
RIVER RADIO BLOOD DRIVE SET FOR TODAY
The River Radio Blood Drive is scheduled for this afternoon in Poplar Bluff.
The Blood Drive will be from noon to 5 pm at the Larry Hillis Service Center on North Westwood Boulevard.
Anyone wanting to donate can call 1-800 Red Cross or visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter the code RiverRadio to schedule an appointment or stop by during the Blood Drive.
DONIPHAN WINS 3RD STRAIGHT LADY ROYALS CHRISTMAS CLASSIC
The Doniphan girls’ basketball team has established a Christmas dynasty in Southeast Missouri.
The Donettes defeated East Carter 54-43 Saturday night to win the 26th Annual Lady Royals Christmas Classic. This is the third straight Christmas Classic Championship for Doniphan.
Also at the Christmas Classic on Saturday, Kennett beat Neelyville in the 3rd place game, Dexter defeated Portageville in the 5th place game, and Malden was victorious over Holcomb for the consolation bracket championship.
BRIDGE MAINTENANCE TO BEGIN TODAY IN NEW MADRID COUNTY
Route D in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.
The section of roadway being reduced is located between Route E and Route MM near Lilbourn.
Weather permitting, work will take place both today and tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
