ABSENTEE VOTING STILL AVAILABLE AHEAD OF NEXT WEEK’S MUNICIPAL ELECTION

The Missouri General Municipal Election Day is less than a week away and if you will be unable to make it to the polls on April 4th, there is still time to vote absentee.

Butler County Clerk Donna Hillis tells KWOC News that absentee voting will be available through 5 pm on Monday, April 3rd. You will not have to provide a reason for voting absentee. The clerk’s office will also be open through noon this Saturday.

Citizens in Poplar Bluff and Butler County will both be voting on tax issues during the municipal election.

The Poplar Bluff proposition asks voters if the city of Poplar Bluff should impose a local use tax at the same rate as the total local sales tax rate.

The Butler County sales tax issue asks if there should be a countywide sales tax of three percent on all tangible personal property retail sales of adult use marijuana sold in the county.

Poplar Bluff City Council Member Robert Smith is being challenged for his position as Ward 5 Councilman by Spencer Jones. There will also be elections for multiple area school boards.

Butler County residents can call the Clerk’s Office at 573-686-8050 to check their registration status and find out their voting location.

MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION REMINDS MISSOURIANS TO WATCH FOR BEARS

With spring underway, the Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding southeast Missouri residents to be Bear Aware.

According to MDC officials, Missouri is home to an estimated 900 black bears with most being in the southern part of the state. During the spring, the bears leave their winter dens in search of food.

MDC Black Bear Biologist Nate Bowersock said it is important that people remove or secure bear attractants from their property, such as bird feeders, trash, barbeque grills, pet food, and food waste.

He noted that intentionally feeding bears can be dangerous as it makes the bears comfortable around people. It can also lead bears to cause significant damage to property while searching for a meal.

For more information on black bears in Missouri as well as tips to avoid issues if a bear has been sighted, go to mdc.mo.gov/BearAware.
