MAN FACING ASSAULT AND WEAPON CHARGES FOLLOWING SHOOTING IN POPLAR BLUFF
One person is in custody in connection to a weekend shooting in Poplar Bluff.
Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News, that the shooting occurred at around 10 pm Saturday night, in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter.
Stewart says the shooting was the result of a family dispute. One person received a non life threatening gunshot wound to the leg area. The victim was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital before being transferred to a Cape Girardeau hospital.
The suspect, identified as 39 year old Rodger Rice, of Poplar Bluff, is the brother of the victim.
Rice was lodged in the Butler County Justice Center on charges of assault 1st degree, armed criminal action, endangering the welfare of a child 1st degree, and unlawful use of a weapon.
The investigation is ongoing, pending the filing of formal charges by the Butler County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK LEAVES ONE DEAD IN WAYNE COUNTY
One person has died in connection to a single vehicle wreck in Wayne County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 29 year old Ethan West, of Annapolis, was driving on Missouri Highway 143 when his vehicle ran off the roadway, struck several trees, and overturned.
The wreck occurred Sunday morning, shortly after 1 am.
West was pronounced dead at the scene by Wayne County Coroner Mark Smith.
POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL TO VOTE ON WATER AND SEWER RATE INCREASES DURING MEETING TONIGHT
The Poplar Bluff City Council will be taking action on multiple proposed ordinances tonight during a regular meeting.
According to the agenda, the council will take action on separate ordinances for increases to the water and sewer rates for Municipal Utilities.
The City Council will also take action on an ordinance for accepting a bid for a roof restoration project for Poplar Bluff Fire Station Number 3.
The meeting is scheduled to begin tonight at 7 pm in the City Council Chambers on South 5th Street.
THIS WEEK IS NATIONAL POLICE WEEK
Police officers are in the spotlight this week for National Police Week.
National Police Week is dedicated to remembering and honoring those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.
According to Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the names of newly fallen officers are engraved on a memorial site every year in Washington DC. On this list, there are countless names from all branches of federal, state, and local law enforcement: over 23,700 and growing.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY ON US HIGHWAY 60
Westbound U.S. Route 60 in Carter County will be reduced to one lane with an 11-foot width restriction beginning today so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform pavement repairs.
According to officials, the work zone is located from Parsons Drive to County Road 109 near Van Buren.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m, daily through Friday, May 26th.
ROADSIDE WORK TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY
Route 142 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform roadside work.
The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 67 near Neelyville to the Ripley County line.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
