COMMANDING OFFICER OF THE MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI TO RETIRE

The man who has led the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Southeast Missouri for the past four years will be stepping down.

According to Colonel Eric T. Olson, superintendent of the Highway Patrol, Captain Philip Gregory, Troop E commanding officer, will retire on August 1st, after 30 years of service.

Captain Gregory grew up in Fredericktown and graduated from Fredericktown High School. Before his appointment to the Patrol, he served as an officer with the Cape Girardeau Police Department, the Chaffee Police Department, and as a paramedic.

Gregory was appointed to the Patrol on August 1, 1993, as a member of the 66th Recruit Class. On July 1st, 2019, Gregory was promoted to captain and designated commanding officer of Troop E in Poplar Bluff.

No information was released on who will be following Gregory in the position.

MAN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IN PRISON FOR ROBBERY OF ESSEX BANK

A Poplar Bluff man will spend multiple years behind bars in connection to a 2019 Essex bank robbery.

Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Sawyer Smith tells KWOC News that Glenn Hamilton was convicted Wednesday on the felony charge of 1st degree robbery.

Smith says that Hamilton forcibly stole $1,890 owned by Southern Bank and threatened a bank teller in October of 2019.

The judge imposed a sentence of 10 years against Hamilton with credit given for time served in the county jail. The remainder of the sentence will be served in the Missouri Department of Corrections.

POPLAR BLUFF YOUTH BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL PLAYERS TO BE A PART OF CARDINALS PREGAME FESTIVITIES TONIGHT

Youth baseball and softball players from Poplar Bluff will be a part of the pregame festivities tonight in St. Louis.

The players will be a part of the pregame parade before the St. Louis Cardinals take on the Washington Nationals at Busch Stadium.

The parade will begin at 6 pm, with first pitch for the game scheduled for 7:15 pm.

BENEFIT EVENT TO BE HELD THIS WEEKEND FOR AREA VETERAN

A benefit event has been scheduled for this weekend to help an area Vietnam veteran.

The Lester Wisdom fundraiser will start at noon on Saturday at the Reynolds County Fairground in Redford.

There will be food, live music, a silent and live auction, a cornhole tournament, a bounce house, events for the entire family, and more.

OPEN ENROLLMENT TO BE HELD IN EARLY AUGUST FOR DONIPHAN R-1

The dates have been announced for the upcoming open enrollment event for the Doniphan R-1 School District.

According to school officials, the event has been scheduled for 9 to 11 am and 1 to 3 pm on August 2nd and 3rd at the Doniphan High School Library.

Open Enrollment is for all new students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.

No appointment is necessary and parents should remember to bring their child’s birth certificate, shot record, proof of residency, and social security card.

REMEMBER TO KEEP YOUR VEHICLES LOCKED TO PROTECT YOUR VALUABLES

Area law enforcement are reminding everyone to take steps to protect their vehicles from potential thieves.

Officials say that there have been several incidents recently where items are being taken from parked vehicles.

Remember to lock your vehicles and keep all valuables out of sight. If possible, park in a well-lighted area and if you have cameras on your home, set them to see the vehicle.
