POPLAR BLUFF MULES FOOTBALL SCRIMMAGE SET FOR THIS WEEKEND
The Poplar Bluff Mules football team will be kicking off the fall season this weekend.
The Maroon/White Scrimmage game will be held on Saturday at 7 pm at the Poplar Bluff High School. Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith tells KWOC News that admission is free, but they will be taking donations to help the Animal Welfare Alliance.
Today’s Talk KWOC 93.3 FM and 930 AM will be covering the scrimmage live beginning at 6:45 pm on the radio and on the KWOC Facebook and River Radio Youtube pages.
GENE BESS TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE NAISMITH BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME ON SATURDAY
Former Three Rivers College Basketball Coach, Gene Bess, will join the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend.
Bess is one of 12 Class of 2023 inductees, including Dirk Nowitzki, Dwayne Wade, and Gregg Popovich, that will be honored on Saturday during a ceremony in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Bess coached at Three Rivers College for 50 years, from 1971 to 2020. During his time leading the Raiders’ program, Bess was named NJCAA National Coach of the Year twice and amassed 1,300 wins. He is the all-time winningest college basketball coach across all levels.
Bess coached his teams to 17 NJCAA Tournament appearances, including four finals and two championships.
The Induction Ceremony will begin at 7 pm on Saturday and will be broadcast on NBA TV.
NORTHEAST ARKANSAS AND MISSOURI BOOTHEEL TO BE UNDER HEAT ADVISORY TODAY
Our southern listening area is being reminded to take steps to beat the heat today.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a heat advisory will be in effect for the Missouri Bootheel as well as all of Northeast Arkansas from noon to 8 pm today.
Officials say that hot temperatures and high humidity could cause heat index values to rise up to around 110 degrees today.
Remember to drink plenty of fluids and stay out of the sun in an air-conditioned room if possible.
POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION TO HOST BACK TO SCHOOL BASH
The Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department is throwing one last party of the summer before kids start school.
The Free Back to School Bash has been scheduled for 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday at Whiteley Park in Poplar Bluff.
There will be a mud volleyball tournament, kick ball, yard games, food trucks, and fun for the entire family.

OZARK BORDER ANNUAL MEETING SCHEDULED FOR TODAY
The annual membership meeting of the Ozark Border Electric Cooperative will be conducted today.
According to a letter sent to members, the meeting will be held at 2:30 pm at the Ozark Border Headquarters on South Westwood Boulevard in Poplar Bluff.
Members will be voting on two bylaw changes, one would provide a larger time frame in which the nominating committee can work and clearly define when petitions for board candidates may be received. The other change would prohibit excessive campaign contributions.
Members will also be voting for the Board of Directors, with two candidates vying for the District 3 seat, Charles Bunting and Jeff Shawan.
Voting will be available at the Poplar Bluff Office today from 7 am to 2 pm.
NEELYVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT OPEN HOUSES TO BE HELD NEXT WEEK
The Neelyville School District will be holding orientation and open house events next week before the beginning of the school year.
According to school officials, Kindergarten Orientation has been scheduled for 6 pm on August 15th at Hillview.
The open houses for all other grade levels will begin at 4:45 pm on August 17th. All High School and Junior High schedules can be viewed on the parent portal on SIS.
POPLAR BLUFF JUNIOR EAGLES HOSTING CAR SHOW TO COLLECT SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR NEEDY CHILDREN
A car show will begin today in Poplar Bluff to collect school supplies for needy children.
The Pride in your Ride Car Show, presented by the Poplar Bluff Junior Eagles, has been scheduled for 10 am to 2 pm both today and tomorrow at the Bluff City Eagles on Broadway Street.
All vehicles are welcome and there will be an entry fee of a backpack or school supplies valued up to $20 or a $20 donation. All proceeds will go to children in need.
There will also be door prizes, music, a dunk tank, raffles, and more.
