VEHICLE STRIKES MARQUEE AT RODGERS THEATRE, CITY WORKING ON IMPROVEMENTS AT THE INTERSECTION

The marquee at Rodgers Theatre in downtown Poplar Bluff has been struck by a vehicle again.

The latest incident occurred Tuesday morning when a truck damaged the marquee, located at the intersection of Pine Street and Broadway.

Poplar Bluff City Manager Matt Winters tells KWOC News that the city, working with Smith and Co. engineers, has submitted a request to the Missouri Department of Transportation for improvements at the intersection.

Since Pine Street is a MoDOT maintained roadway, all work or improvements must be approved by MoDOT.

Winters says that they are awaiting a permit to begin construction of the improvements.

COAST TO COAST MOTORCYCLE RUN TO TRAVEL THROUGH SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A Motorcycle run spanning from Virginia to California will be passing through Southeast Missouri today.

Close to 100 riders are participating in the 2023 edition of the Motorcycle Cannonball, which started on September 7th at Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The Motorcycle Cannonball is a cross-country challenge for riders with motorcycles that were manufactured in 1933 or earlier, and is the most difficult antique endurance run in the world.

The riders are departing Cape Girardeau this morning on their way to Branson for Stage Five of the event.

The 16 stage run will come to an end on September 24th at Oceanside, California.

POPLAR BLUFF TEACHER AWARDED GRANT FOR DRAMA PRODUCTION CLASS

Poplar Bluff Junior High drama students will be getting some extra funds for their production this year.

The newly created drama production class at Poplar Bluff Junior High was awarded $500 by the Missouri Retired Teachers Foundation.

Hilary Taylor authored the successful proposal, marking the third year in a row the teacher has received the MRTF grant.

One or more Poplar Bluff teachers have been selected as recipients annually through the foundation since 2017.

The budget outlined in Taylor’s write-up included lumber, foam sheets, screws and paint. There are presently 23 students enrolled in the year-long class. Taylor previously led a drama elective, which was only a semester, and additionally incorporated elements of public speaking.

With the expanded curriculum, students will research and evaluate different script choices, vote to determine which production they will audition for, and then put on a full-length play in the spring.

MAN FACING MURDER CHARGE IN CONNECTION TO SIKESTON HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION

A suspect is facing multiple charges, including first degree murder in connection to an incident on Monday.

Sergeant Tyler Rowe with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that officers were dispatched to a residence on Washington Street Monday morning for a report of an assault where one subject was suspected to be injured.

The victim, identified as 66 year old Curtis McKinney, was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.

During the course of the investigation a suspect was located and taken into custody.

The suspect, identified as Anthony Pearson, has been formally charged with Murder 1st Degree, Armed Criminal Action, and Burglary 1st Degree. He is currently being held without bond.

DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY IN THE CAMPBELL AREA

Route WW in Dunklin County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of roadway being closed is located from Tucker Road to County Road 222 near Campbell.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

SHOULDER WORK TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY ON SOUTHBOUND INTERSTATE 55

Southbound Interstate 55 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane today so construction crews can perform shoulder work. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the work zone is located from mile marker 60 to mile marker 58 near Matthews.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through 6 p.m.
