AREA OFFICER RECOGNIZED FOR SAVING MAN’S LIFE

An area police officer has been recognized for saving a man’s life.

According to the Paragould Police Department, Sergeant Jeff Shirley was awarded the Life Saving Award for saving a male who was inside a garage with his foot stuck on his vehicle’s accelerator.

Officials say the car was up against the wall with the tires spinning. Smoke and fire were emerging from the wheels causing the garage and house to be filled with smoke.

Sergeant Shirley broke out the car window and was able to shut the vehicle off. He then pulled the man out of the car and rendered aid to him while the subject was in medical distress.

BATTLE IN THE BLUFF SCHEDULED FOR JANUARY 13TH

Over 350 cheerleaders will be gathering in Poplar Bluff this month for the Battle in the Bluff, presented by Mossy Oak Properties Mozark Realty and Southern Bank.

Poplar Bluff Cheer and Tumbling is hosting the 2nd annual competition at the Black River Coliseum on January 13th, beginning at 9 am.

Multiple teams will be competing against each other with a trophy going to the top team in each division.

Admission is $10 and children two years old and under will get in for free.

DATE ANNOUNCED FOR 2024 THREE RIVERS COLLEGE ALUMNI REUNION

The date has been announced for the 2024 Three Rivers College Alumni Reunion.

A full day of festivities is planned for Saturday, February 24th on the campus of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.

Events include a pancake breakfast, fine art showcase, Alumni Star reception, 50 Years of Nursing reception, Raider of the Year recognition, and both Lady Raiders and Raiders basketball games versus Moberly.

DEADLINE COMING UP TO PURCHASE TAGS FOR BULKY ITEM PICKUP

This Friday is the final day for Poplar Bluff residents to purchase tags for this month’s Bulky Item Pickup.

Residents can purchase bulk item tags from the City Collector’s office at City Hall for $20. The tags entitle you to the removal of four bulk items, such as couches or refrigerators. Tires may be collected for a charge of $3 per tire with a limit of four tires.

No construction materials or small items will be picked up and the program is for residential areas only.

Friday is the final day to purchase item tags at City Hall to be included in next week’s pick up, which will be conducted on Tuesday, January 9th.

FIVE TRAFFIC FATALITIES REPORTED IN MISSOURI OVER NEW YEAR’S HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Multiple traffic fatalities were reported in Missouri over the New Year’s holiday weekend.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, five people died in traffic crashes during the counting period, which began at 6 p.m. on December 29th and ended at 11:59 p.m. on January 1st.

Troopers investigated a total of 115 crashes, which resulted in 59 injuries. Troopers also made 139 DWI arrests.

None of the fatalities were located in Southeast Missouri.

During the 2023 New Year’s holiday counting period, six people were killed and 345 injured in 925 traffic crashes statewide. During last year’s New Year’s holiday, troopers worked 236 of those crashes which included 81 injuries and 2 fatalities.

REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK ALONG ROUTE 61 IN NEW MADRID

U.S. Route 61 in New Madrid County will be reduced this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

The work zone is located between Mill Street and Des Cyprie Place Road in New Madrid.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Friday.
