Stoddard County Coroner Brent Stidham tells KWOC News that his office investigated a total of 117 cases last year.
In his annual report, Stidham says that there was one homicide and eight suicide investigations during the course of 2023. 94 of the cases were for natural causes.
Stidham also added that there was a spike in child fatalities last year, with five of the cases concerning children 18 years old and younger. 18 cases were for between the ages of 19 and 45, 47 for ages 46 to 69, and another 47 for ages 70 and over.
The report says there was not a single overdose death recorded in Stoddard County last year. While in some cases drug use was a potential contributing factor, there were not any that were deemed an overdose.
Stidham cited several reasons for this, including public knowledge of properly administering Narcan, the increasing availability and success of inpatient and outpatient rehab facilities in the area, and excellent efforts by all Stoddard County law enforcement agencies, among others.
