ASHTON MAYS ELECTED 2024 HOMECOMING QUEEN FOR POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL

A little bit of rain couldn’t stop the coronation of a new Poplar Bluff Homecoming Queen.

Ashton Mays was announced as the 2024 Poplar Bluff Homecoming Queen Friday night before the Mules football team took the field to challenge the Farmington Knights.

Ashton has been a committed member of the Volleyball team throughout all four years at Poplar Bluff, playing on varsity her sophomore, junior, and senior years.

She participated in Student Council her freshman year and has stayed an active member of Mule Barn and BETA all four years. Her sophomore year she was awarded Academic All-State.

Mays was escorted Friday night by Nicholas “Chase” O’Neal, who cited his biggest role model as his mom because she has always supported him, taken him to practice and the doctor, and given him advice when he needed it.

The four other members of the 2024 Poplar Bluff Homecoming Court were Kaitlyn Booker, who was escorted by Lincoln Warren, Lily Gregory, who was escorted by Hunter Clifford, Willow Luke, who was escorted by Kylar Wilson, and Reece Prenger, who was escorted by Dereck Burton.

THREAT CAUSES CANCELATION OF CLASSES AT KENNETT SCHOOLS

There will be no school today in the Kennett School District.

According to a release from district officials, on Sunday, the Kennett Administration was informed of a threat made toward Kennett High School.

Officials immediately notified the Kennett Police Department and the Dunklin County Juvenile Office of the incident.

An investigation into the threat is ongoing, however Superintendent Dr. Richie Leeker says that the district will not have school today out of an abundance of caution.

TRUMP WAS THE SUBJECT OF AN APPARENT ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT AT HIS FLORIDA GOLF CLUB

The FBI says Donald Trump was the target of “what appears to be an attempted assassination” at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The former president says he's safe and well, and authorities are holding a man in custody.

The man in custody has been identified as Ryan Routh.

Secret Service agents stationed a few holes up from where Trump was playing noticed the muzzle of an AK-style rifle sticking through the shrubbery that lines the course.

A sheriff says an agent fired and the gunman dropped the rifle and fled, leaving it behind along with two backpacks, a scope used for aiming and a GoPro camera.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed and were being updated on the investigation. Harris, in a statement, said “violence has no place in America.”

INVESTIGATION ONGOING IN CONNECTION TO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SHOOTING

An investigation is ongoing in connection to a shooting Friday night in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Hayti Police Department, shortly before 9 pm Friday night, officers were dispatched to a location on North Oats Drive for a male subject who had been shot in the neck.

The subject was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Hayti Police Chief David Maclin tells KWOC News that one subject has been arrested in connection to the shooting. The name of the suspect has not been released.

FATAL CRASH FORCES CLOSURE OF INTERSTATE 57 FOR SEVERAL HOURS

Northbound Interstate 57 in Southeast Missouri was closed for several hours on Friday following a fatal commercial vehicle crash.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred Friday morning around the two mile marker when a vehicle struck the rear of a boom truck and then crossed the median and struck a freightliner at mile marker two.

The driver of the first vehicle, 76 year old Willie Miller, of Ullin, Illinois, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the freightliner received minor injuries.

HAYTI MAN SENTENCED IN CONNECTION TO FATAL AND NONFATAL SHOOTING

A Southeast Missouri man will spend over two decades in prison for his role in a fatal and non fatal shooting.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 44 year old Eugene Winters, of Hayti, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court last November to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Winters admitted that just before 7:30 p.m. on April 19, 2023, he shot two people at a business in Hayti. Both victims were transported to a Memphis hospital where one of them died.

Officials say that Winters has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

INTERSTATE 55 TO BE REDUCED TODAY FOR BRIDGE MAINTENANCE

Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction today so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform bridge maintenance.

The work zone is located between mile markers 1.6 and 2.6.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through 4:30 p.m.
