LINEUP ANNOUNCED FOR 2024 POPLAR BLUFF SHOWDOWN

The eight teams who will be playing in the 2024 Poplar Bluff Showdown have been announced.

Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith tells KWOC News that the field will include teams from five different states.

Poplar Bluff will be joined by Staley and Vashon from Missouri, Izard County and Maumelle from Arkansas, McCracken County from Kentucky, Urbana from Illinois, and Trinity Christian from Tennessee.

The three day Tournament will begin on Thursday, December 26th.

VETERANS DEPART THIS MORNING FOR 14TH ANNUAL HONOR TOUR

30 area veterans and 20 guardians will depart from Poplar Bluff this morning en route to Washington D.C.

The 14th Annual Veterans Honor Tour will give local veterans the opportunity to see national monuments and museums in Washington D.C., at no cost to the veterans.

The veterans will be leaving at 7:30 this morning from First Baptist Church for the three day tour. Area first responders will be escorting the veterans out of town on their way to St. Louis for their flight.

MAN DIES AFTER DOG ATTACK IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

An elderly man has died following a dog attack in Dunklin County.

According to Dunklin County Sheriff Bob Holder, shortly after 3:30 pm on Wednesday, deputies were dispatched to a location in Cardwell for a 72 year male that had fallen to the ground and been attacked by a dog.

First responders informed deputies that they were on scene but were unable to get access to the victim due to the presence of multiple aggressive dogs.

When deputies arrived they began to approach the victim and a dog suddenly charged them. In response, an officer fired his weapon, killing the dog.

The victim’s wife said she had tried to assist her husband, identified as Jimmy Miller, in getting up, but was unable to do so herself. She said that was when one of their dogs came over to her husband and began attacking him while he was on the ground.

Miller sustained multiple injuries consistent with a dog attack, including severe lacerations to his arms, face, and throat along with a significant amount of blood loss.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.

DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON RAPE WARRANT

A Dexter man is in custody on a rape warrant in Stoddard County.

According to Missouri Case Net, 42 year old Michael Harris has been charged with rape 2nd degree and person with serious infectious or communicable disease knowingly exposing another person to the disease.

Harris is alleged to have had sex with a woman against her consent while knowing he had tested positive for HIV.

Harris is being held on no bond.

FALL BUFF UP THE BLUFF COMING ON OCTOBER 12TH

The 2024 Fall Buff up the Bluff event is set for next month.

The citywide clean up event has been scheduled for Saturday, October 12th.

Henson’s Transfer Station on the Industrial Park Bypass will be accepting items from 8 am to 3 pm. Proof of Poplar Bluff residency will be required.

Items being accepted include bulky items such as scrap metal, furniture, construction materials and tires.

Drivers must be prepared to unload their own vehicle.

HUNTER EDUCATION CLASS TO BE HELD IN DONIPHAN

A hunter education class will be held this weekend in Doniphan.

The Hunter Education Skills Session has been scheduled for Saturday, September 28th at the Old Current River Career Center Auditorium. The event will be from 8 am to noon.

Students must be 11 years of age or older to attend and have completed the Knowledge Portion of the Hunter Education course before attending.

Hunter Education books are available for free at the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office and the Doniphan Mark Twain National Forest Service Office.
