WEATHER CAUSES POWER OUTAGE IN POPLAR BLUFF

A lightning strike caused power to go out for thousands of people yesterday in Butler County.

Officials with Municipal Utilities tell KWOC News that over 3,400 customers were without power during the outage, which lasted nearly 45 minutes.

Power was restored at around 5:50 pm.

According to the National Weather Service, radar estimated that two to three inches of rain fell in and near Poplar Bluff from 4 pm to just after 5 pm on Thursday. The heavy rainfall during the thunderstorms caused a Flash Flood Warning to be issued. 

MISSOURI TO END ALL FEDERAL PANDEMIC RELATED UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS THIS WEEKEND

The state of Missouri is set to end all federal pandemic-related unemployment insurance programs this weekend.

Governor Mike Parson announced last month that the state will end participation in the programs effective June 12th.

Parson cited labor shortages across the state as the reason that he was ending the benefits.

The termination applies to six programs including, Pandemic Unemployment Assistance; Emergency Unemployment Relief for Government Entities and Nonprofit Organizations; Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation; Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation; 100 Percent Reimbursement of Short-Time Compensation Benefit Costs Paid Under State Law; and Mixed Earner Unemployment Compensation.

 

SEARCH WARRANT LEADS TO DRUG BUST IN PARAGOULD

Authorities in Paragould have made an arrest in connection to a search warrant executed on Thursday.

According to the Paragould Police Department, they were contacted by investigators from the Jonesboro Police Department for assistance in executing a search warrant at a residence in Paragould.

During a search of the residence, authorities located a loaded handgun, 6.3 ounces of marijuana, 3.3 pounds of THC edibles, and a large assortment of paraphernalia.

Officials say that an arrest has been made, but the identity of the person arrested was not released.

OZARK BORDER ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE REPORTS CUSTOMERS HAVE BEEN RECEIVING SCAM PHONE CALLS

The Ozark Border Electric Cooperative says that they have received reports of scam phone calls.

According to a post on the Cooperative’s Facebook page, they have been notified by some of their members who had received calls stating that Ozark Border was coming out to do a meter change and that their account is going to be disconnected.

The post says that the calls are a scam.

PUXICO FIRE DEPARTMENT HOSTING FISH FRY THIS WEEKEND

The Puxico Fire Department is hosting a Fish Fry on Saturday.

The event has been scheduled for 11 am to 6 pm and plates will be available for eight dollars.

A plate will include three pieces of fish, french fries, cole slaw, hush puppies, and tartar sauce.

All proceeds will be used to fund the building of offices in the Fire Department’s new station. 

POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER JUNIOR TENNIS PROGRAM

The Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department is accepting applications for the 2021 Summer Junior Tennis Program.

The classes for kids in Kindergarten through eighth grade will be held from Monday through Thursday over two weeks beginning June 14th at Hillcrest Park.

The fee is $15, plus an unopened can of Penn or Wilson Tennis balls. You can get more information plus the registration forms at the Department office on North 2nd Street.
