POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENTS TO DECIDE ON WARD FIVE CITY COUNCIL SEAT IN APRIL

Filing has been completed for the municipal elections that will be conducted early next year.

In Poplar Bluff, there will be a competitive race for councilman of Ward Five.

Incumbent Robert Smith is being challenged by Spencer Jones. Smith was first elected to the Poplar Bluff City Council in 2002.

For the Poplar Bluff School Board six people filed for three open seats including incumbent Jerrod Murphy and Mike Price, who was appointed to fill a vacancy on the board earlier this year. The other four people to file include Anthony Curnutt, David Elledge, Larry Kimbrow, and Raymond Webb.

Current School Board President John Scott will not seek re-election.

The Missouri General Municipal Election Day has been set for April 4th of next year. The last day to register to vote will be March 8th. 

BLOOD DRIVE SET FOR TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

A blood drive has been scheduled for today in Poplar Bluff.

The Paws and Pints blood drive will be held from 12:30 to 5:30 pm this afternoon at the Black River Coliseum.

If you donate during the Blood Drive, you will receive a new long-sleeved Red-Cross T-Shirt, while supplies last.

SLAM DUNK AND THREE POINT CONTESTS TO HIGHLIGHT TODAY AT THE POPLAR BLUFF SHOWDOWN

The stars will be shining this morning at the 35th Annual Poplar Bluff Showdown.

The Showdown Slam Dunk and Three-Point Contests will begin at 10 am this morning at Poplar Bluff High School.

The semifinals are also scheduled for today starting at 7 pm. The consolation bracket games will begin at 4 pm.

Today’s Talk KWOC will have live video coverage of every game during the Showdown, along with the 3 Point and Slam Dunk Contests, on our Facebook and Youtube pages.

Live audio coverage of every Poplar Bluff Mules game, as well as the tournament championship game, will also be broadcast on 93.3 FM, 930 AM, and at KWOC.com. 

RUN THE LAKE 5K TO BE HELD IN FEBRUARY

The Poplar Bluff Trails Coalition has scheduled a 5K race for early next year.

The Run the Lake 5K will start at 9 am on Saturday, February 11th.

The run will be at the Allison Cemetery Trail at Lake Wappapello State Park. For more information, visit the Run the Lake 5K event page on Facebook. 

OFFICIALS ENCOURAGING MOTORISTS TO BE SAFE WHILE CELEBRATING THE NEW YEAR

The New Year will begin this weekend and officials are reminding everyone who is planning to get out and celebrate this weekend to drive safely.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, during the 2022 New Year’s period, one person was killed and 331 were injured in 1,045 traffic crashes in Missouri. 

If you are driving to a New Year’s gathering, remember to buckle up and obey all traffic laws. If your plans include alcohol, remember to designate a sober driver or take a ride service to get home safely.

The 2023 New Year’s holiday counting period begins at 6 p.m. on Friday and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, January 2nd.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA CLUB TO PERFORM BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

The Poplar Bluff High School Drama Club will be performing a classic Disney story next month.

The Drama Club is presenting Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” at 7 p.m. on January 13th, 14th, 20th, and 21st in the Kay Porter Theater on Victory Lane.

There is also a 2 pm matinee performance scheduled for January 15th.

Officials say that tickets cost $5 and will be available at the door.
