NEW DIRECTOR CHOSEN FOR POPLAR BLUFF MUNICIPAL LIBRARY

A new director has been chosen for the Poplar Bluff Municipal Library.

Shannon Midyett was named the Director Designate by unanimous vote last week at the Library Board of Trustees meeting. She begins her full duties as director in January 2023.

Midyett has worked for the Poplar Bluff Library for almost 27 years.

The current director, Sue Crites Szostak, will work with Midyett over the next year ensuring that there will be a smooth transition between directors.

FOREST SERVICE OFFICIALS RESPOND TO WILDFIRE NEAR WILLIAMSVILLE

Officials with Mark Twain National Forest responded to a wildfire yesterday, near Williamsville.

According to officials, the wildfire was approximately one quarter of an acre and was located approximately four miles south of Williamsville.

The fire was stopped and no information was released on any property being damaged. 

RIPLEY COUNTY TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING REGARDING WATER PROJECT

Ripley County will hold a public hearing later this month to discuss the submission of an application to the Community Development Block Grant Emergency program for a water project.

The hearing will be held at 8:50 am on Wednesday, February 23rd in the Commissioner Chambers located at the Ripley County Courthouse.

Ripley County is requesting funds to drill and install a new well near Highway T on behalf of the Public Water Supply District #2. The total project cost is estimated at $750,000.

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS AWARDED DURING JAZZ FESTIVAL IN ST. LOUIS

Multiple students from Poplar Bluff received awards during a recent jazz festival in St. Louis.

Several Poplar Bluff High School Studio Jazz Band students received outstanding musicianship awards during the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival last month at the University of Missouri – St. Louis.

Students honored during the festival included Brileigh Cates, Logan Hale, and Ja’Lonnie Johnson-Spann. Cates, Connar Jones, Diamond Weaver, and Jonathan Moreno were also recognized collectively as a part of the saxophone section.

The festival typically requires bands to play arrangements by Duke Ellington, but this year arrangements by Count Basie were also permitted.

NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT

Missouri Route 162 in New Madrid County will be closed beginning today as contractor crews replace two bridges, one over Ditch Number 1 and the other over Ditch Number 251.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway to be closed is located between Route B South and Route B North, near Portageville.

Weather permitting, work will begin today, with completion anticipated by Tuesday, June 21st.

SHOULDER REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS THIS WEEK IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 153 in Stoddard County will be reduced this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform shoulder repairs. 

The section of roadway to be affected is located from U.S. Route 60 to Route D.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 am to 2:30 pm.
