WINTER STORM WARNING TO BE IN EFFECT STARTING TONIGHT

A winter storm warning will go into effect this evening.

According to the National Weather Service, most of Southeast Missouri will be under the warning from 6 pm tonight to 6 pm on Thursday.

The Winter Storm Warning in the Missouri bootheel and Northeast Arkansas will run from noon today to 6 pm tomorrow night.

Moderate to heavy mixed precipitation is expected, mainly freezing rain and some sleet. Ice accumulations of one quarter of an inch or more, with some minor accumulations of sleet are possible.

Scattered power outages and some tree damage are likely due to the ice as well as hazardous travel conditions.

DRIVERS URGED TO WATCH FOR ICY ROADS

With winter weather forecast to start today, the Missouri Department of Transportation is urging drivers to be cautious of slick roads.

If you must travel during the winter storm, make sure to have a full tank of gas, extra blankets and gloves, as well as provisions like water and snacks in the event of an emergency. Keep your cellphone charged, but do not use it while driving.

While driving, remember to buckle up and give yourself plenty of extra time to get to your destination.

MoDOT crews will be treating roads ahead of the storm and crews will begin around-the-clock operations starting this afternoon. Be cautious and give road crews room to work.

DONIPHAN MAN SENTENCED TO TEN YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR POSSESSING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

A Doniphan man will spend the next decade behind bars on a child pornography charge.

Officials with the United States Attorney's Office tell KWOC News that 45 year old James Taylor was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in federal prison for the offense of Possession of Child Pornography.

According to court documents, law enforcement officials responded to Taylor’s residence in March of 2021 after receiving a tip that he was using Facebook to upload files containing child pornography.

During an examination of Taylor’s mobile phone, investigators discovered several images of child pornography. Taylor later admitted that he used his mobile phone to obtain the images over the internet.

After serving his 120-month sentence, Taylor will be placed on a lifetime term of supervised release. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRAIGNED ON STATUTORY RAPE CHARGE

A Poplar Bluff man appeared in court Tuesday on a statutory rape charge.

According to Missouri Case Net, a warrant was served over the weekend for 18 year old William Greer on charges of statutory rape or attempted statutory rape – 1st degree, statutory sodomy or attempted statutory sodomy, and 3rd degree child molestation.

The victim in the case was under the age of 14.

Greer’s arraignment was held Tuesday morning and his next court date was scheduled for early March. 

BERNIE AND ADVANCE TO PLAY IN DISTRICT BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

More area teams have punched their tickets to their basketball district championships.

For the boys, East Carter, Bernie, Advance, and Greenville all won Tuesday night to advance to their respective district championships.

On the girls side, Naylor won their place in the Class 2, District 1 Finals.

Multiple district championships will be played tonight, including Caruthersville taking on Charleston for the Class 3, District 1 Boys championship. In the Class 3, District 1 Girls Championship, Twin Rivers will face Portageville. 

MISSISSIPPI MAN ARRESTED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI FOR ECSTASY

Authorities in Southeast Missouri have arrested a Mississippi man on multiple felony charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 35 year old Kendrall Johnson, of Jackson, Mississippi, was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – ecstasy and unlawful use of a weapon.

Following the arrest, Johnson was held at the New Madrid County Jail.
