VAN BUREN MAN CONVICTED OF THE SHOOTING OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS

A Van Buren man has been convicted of the shooting of two law enforcement officers in 2019.

James Cummings, of Van Buren, was convicted Friday on four counts of assault 1st degree and armed criminal action stemming from the shooting of a Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper and a Carter County Deputy in August of 2019.

The officers had been attempting to serve an eviction notice at a residence when they were struck by gunfire coming from inside the residence.

Both officers survived the incident

Cummings' sentencing date was set for September 22nd. 

ONE DEAD, TWO INJURED, IN CONNECTION TO INCIDENT INVOLVING CAMPER IN STODDARD COUNTY

One person has died, while two others were injured, following an incident involving a camper Friday in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, three people were attempting to fix the brakes on a towed camper when the brakes disengaged, causing the camper to strike all three subjects.

70 year old Rondal Taylor, of Essex, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other two people were transported to area hospitals. 

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK BY A DUMP TRUCK IN POPLAR BLUFF

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle Friday in Poplar Bluff.

Sources say that the pedestrian was struck by a dump truck on the campus of Three Rivers College.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department, Poplar Bluff Fire Department, and Butler County EMS all responded to the incident.

The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital and their condition was not available. 

WAPPAPELLO MAN KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

An area man has died following a wreck in Wappapello on Thursday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 82 year old William Cade, of Wappapello, was driving on Highway T when his vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway, struck a culvert, and overturned.

Cade was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital where he was later pronounced dead. 

BRIGGS AND STRATTON TO HOST HIRING EVENT IN POPLAR BLUFF THIS WEEK

An area business will be hosting a hiring event this week in Poplar Bluff.

The event will be at Briggs and Stratton from 9 am to 5 pm on Wednesday.

Officials say that employees will be there to assist job seekers with the application process. All applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.

MAGNITUDE 2.4 EARTHQUAKE SHAKES BUTLER COUNTY

Northern Butler County was shaken by an earthquake over the weekend.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.4 earthquake occurred at 4:35 am Saturday morning.

The quake was located approximately nine miles north of Poplar Bluff.  

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN BERNIE

Route 25 in Stoddard County will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. 

According to officials, the section of roadway to be reduced is located from West Allis Avenue to North Drake Street in Bernie.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
