17th ANNUAL CHILI COOK-OFF SET FOR FEBRUARY 25TH

A date has been set for the Mason-Dixon Chili Society’s 17th annual Chili Cook-Off.

The event will be held from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday, February 25th at the Black River Coliseum and admission is free. A cook’s party will be held the day before the event.

The participation fee is $100 per booth if you register by February 13th. Proceeds from the Cook-Off go to benefit the United Gospel Rescue Mission.

JUVENILE FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A WRECK IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

A juvenile was flown from the scene of a wreck Monday evening in Dunklin County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a freightliner failed to yield on US Highway 412 and traveled into the path of a Ford Mustang.

The 17 year old driver of the Mustang suffered moderate injuries in the crash and was flown to a Memphis hospital. No injuries were listed for the driver of the freightliner. 

ANNUAL COUNT OF HOMELESS POPULATION TO BE HELD THIS MONTH

An area organization is participating in a survey to determine the homeless population in Missouri.

The Point in Time Count will be held on Wednesday, January 25th.

FCC Behavioral Health will be conducting the survey of homeless individuals and families in the area to help the community get a better understanding of the needs of people who are experiencing homelessness.

Officials say that documenting the extent of homelessness impacts funding for food pantries, homeless shelters, and meal programs.

GRANT MONEY AVAILABLE FOR PROJECT PROM AND HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION LOCK IN EVENTS

High Schools in Southeast Missouri that will be putting on safety events for students this spring have an opportunity to save some money.

The Southeast Coalition for Roadway Safety is offering grant funding to local schools that hold student lock-in events for Project Prom or High School graduation.

Events must include a presentation or activity educating students on highway safety issues within their night’s agenda. Qualifying schools will receive $200 each to assist with event expenses such as location rental, food, or entertainment.

The Southeast Coalition will be accepting grant applications through February 13th. Officials say that funding is available for up to 40 local schools and if you would like more information, contact Southeast Coalition Coordinator Ashley Metelski at 573-472-5885.

PIEDMONT MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON METH CHARGE

Authorities in Wayne County have arrested an area man on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 61 year old George Hubert was taken into custody Monday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Hubert is also facing a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, he was transported to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. 

ROAD WORK SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN DEXTER

Business 60 in Stoddard County is being reduced this week so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform drainage repairs.  

According to officials, the work zone is located from North One Mile Road to Cooper Street in Dexter.  

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Friday.
