RETIREMENT CEREMONY TO BE HELD TODAY FOR LONGTIME POPLAR BLUFF FIREFIGHTER ROY LANE
The Poplar Bluff community will be gathering today to celebrate a long time Poplar Bluff Firefighter.
Roy Lane is retiring after 21 years of service. Lane graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 1988 and also served in the United States Navy from 1988 to 1992.
Lane started with the Poplar Bluff Fire Department as a firefighter in 2002, eventually moving his way up the ladder to the rank of Battalion Chief.
Fire Chief Mike Moffitt tells KWOC News that Lane has been instrumental in training, and implemented the Firefighter and Officer of the Year Awards in 2020, winning Officer of the Year in 2021.
Lane is the current President of the Poplar Bluff Scholarship
Fund, which he organized in 2022.
The retirement ceremony is scheduled for 2 to 4 pm today at the Black River Coliseum. The public is welcome to attend.
LATEST DROUGHT MONITOR SHOWS MOST OF STODDARD COUNTY IS IN SEVERE DROUGHT
The latest US Drought Monitor has been released showing most of Southeast Missouri is in at least a moderate drought.
The monitor, released on Thursday, also has most of Stoddard and Scott Counties currently experiencing severe drought.
Small portions of Northeast Butler County and Northern New Madrid County were also classified as being in severe drought.
POPLAR BLUFF BACK TO SCHOOL BASH SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY
A Back to School Bash has been scheduled for this weekend in Poplar Bluff.
The event, for kids in Pre Kindergarten through 12th grade, will feature free backpacks, school supplies, kid’s haircuts, food, face painting and more.
No registration is required.

15TH ANNUAL MULE SKINNER GOLF TOURNAMENT SET FOR NEXT WEEK
The 15th Annual Mule Skinner Golf Tournament is coming up next week.
The 4 person scramble tournament will be held on Friday, August 4th at the Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff. Lunch will begin at 11:30 am with a shotgun start at 1 pm.
Organizers say the entry fee is $600 per team, which includes a cart and lunch. Hole sponsorships are available for $200 per hole.
All proceeds will go to benefit Poplar Bluff Mules athletics programs.

NEW CEO NAMED FOR POPLAR BLUFF REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER
A new Chief Executive Officer has been named for the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.
Effective August 14th, Clyde Wood will take over the role held by Rick Naegler.
Wood joins Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center after serving for the past year at CEO Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He had previously worked for Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center from 2006 to 2009, ultimately serving as Chief Operating Officer.
He began his career working as a physical therapist for six years in Branson. Wood also served in the United States Army Reserves from 1991-1999.
KING OF THE RIVER BASS TOURNAMENT TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CARTER COUNTY NUTRITION CENTER
A fishing tournament is coming up this weekend to raise money for an area nutrition center.
The 22nd Annual “King of the River” Bass Tournament will be held on Saturday from 7 am to 5 pm on Current River in Van Buren.
Officials say that trophies and prizes will be awarded as a part of the competition. All proceeds are for the Carter County Nutrition Center.

US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS TO HOST NATURE EVENT TODAY IN GREENVILLE
The US Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake will be hosting a nature event today in Greenville.
Pretty, Pretty Nature is scheduled for 6 pm this evening at the Greenville Recreation Area, shelter 10.
Attendees will get to learn about and discover the wonders of butterflies.
