MAN DROWNS WHILE KAYAKING ON CURRENT RIVER
An area man drowned last week in Southeast Missouri.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 48 year old Jason Bollinger, of Birch Tree, was kayaking on Current River when he fell into the water and failed to resurface. The incident occurred Friday afternoon at Martin Hole, ten miles east of Eminence
Bollinger was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Shannon County Deputy Coroner.
DATES SET FOR OPEN HOUSE AND ORIENTATIONS IN THE POPLAR BLUFF R-1 SCHOOL DISTRICT
Parents in Poplar Bluff will have the opportunity to learn more about the schools their children will be attending this fall during a series of open houses scheduled for this month.
Open houses will be held for the Kindergarten, 5th, 6th, and 7th grades on Tuesday, August 15th. The 8th Grade Orientation will also be held on the 15th
The four elementary schools will be holding their Open Houses on Wednesday, August 16th.
On Thursday, August 17th, there will be the 4th grade and Poplar Bluff Technical Center Open Houses.
For Poplar Bluff High School, freshman orientation is set for August 16th, with the High School Open House following on August 17th.
Early Childhood Meet the teacher visits are scheduled for August 10th and 11th, as well as from the 15th through the 18th.
The first day of school has been scheduled for Monday, August 21st.

POPLAR BLUFF HOUSING AUTHORITY TO HOST BLOCK PARTY TONIGHT
The Poplar Bluff Housing Authority will be throwing a block party tonight.
The National Night Out Block Party will be held from 5 to 8 pm at the Housing Authority on North E Street.
The event will include food, games, a petting zoo, music, family activities, and more.
Officials say that the Block Party is to promote strong police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.
JOSHUA UNDERWOOD APPOINTED AS CIRCUIT JUDGE FOR NEW MADRID AND PEMISCOT COUNTIES
An associate circuit judge has been promoted in Southeast Missouri.
Governor Mike Parson has announced that Joshua Underwood, of New Madrid, has been appointed as the Circuit Judge for the 34th Judicial Circuit, which covers New Madrid and Pemiscot Counties.
Underwood will succeed the late Honorable William Edward Reeves.
Underwood currently serves as an associate circuit judge for New Madrid County.
WREATHS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE FOR VETERAN WREATH PLACEMENT CEREMONY
You can now purchase a wreath that will be placed on the grave of a veteran later this year.
On December 16th, 2023, the Poplar Bluff Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in cooperation with Wreaths Across America, will hold a ceremony at the Poplar Bluff Memorial Gardens Cemetery to honor veterans buried there.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 am.
Everyone is invited to attend the ceremony, which will be followed by placing live wreaths on veteran’s graves.
Those who have purchased wreaths for a specific veteran in the cemetery may place the live wreaths on those graves.
Live wreaths are available for purchase at $17 each.

NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD TO BE REDUCED THIS WEEK FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS
Route HH in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.
The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 61 to County Road 621.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, through Thursday.
