TWO IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING SHOOTING IN DEXTER
Multiple people are in custody after shots were fired in Dexter.
Dexter Chief of Police Hank Trout tells KWOC News that shortly after 9 am on Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the Wal-Mart regarding a report of shots being fired.
A preliminary investigation uncovered that individuals from one vehicle had approached another vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot. The individuals then returned to their vehicle and attempted to drive away. At that time, the driver of the parked vehicle exited his vehicle, pulled a handgun, and fired at the other vehicle.
Both vehicles then left the area.
Officers stopped one of the vehicles on Specialty Drive in Dexter and took two suspects in custody. A firearm was also recovered.
The vehicle that was shot at was later located in Hayti. No occupants were inside the vehicle.
Trout says that the suspects are currently being held at the Dexter Police Department pending the filing of formal charges.
The investigation is ongoing and KWOC News will keep following this story for you.
DONIPHAN SCHOOL DISTRICT PROPOSES 85 CENT TAX LEVY TO ATTRACT AND RETAIN TEACHERS
Voters in the Doniphan R-1 School District will be voting on a tax levy this spring.
Proposition Teach will be on the ballot during the April 2nd general Municipal Election Day. The proposition would authorize the Doniphan Board of Education to increase the operating tax levy by 85 cents per one hundred dollars of assessed valuation.
The ballot language says that the increase is for the purposes of attracting and retaining quality certified and support staff, maintaining facilities, and meeting additional operating expenses.
PRIORITY DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID
The priority deadline is quickly approaching for future and current college students to complete their free application for federal student aid for the 2024-2025 school year.
According to StudentAid.Gov, students should complete the FAFSA application by February 1st to receive priority consideration for federal and state grants and scholarships.
Applications will be accepted through April 1st.
Poplar Bluff High School will be hosting a FAFSA Frenzy event tonight to help Poplar Bluff students complete their FAFSA.
The event will be held from 5 to 7 pm at the Senior High School cafeteria.
MULTIPLE ORGANIZATIONS DONATE TO POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS
Multiple organizations have donated to help the kids at Poplar Bluff Schools.
According to school officials, the Child Concern of Butler County donated $5,000 to Poplar Bluff Schools from revenue of its recent building sale in an effort to stock ‘giving closets’ in buildings across the district.
Each R-I school received $500 – along with the other school systems in the county – to primarily go toward student food insecurity as well as clothing needs.
The Masonic Lodge also recently donated $6,000 to Poplar Bluff Schools, split between Eugene Field and Lake Road Elementary, to go toward clothing items for students in need.
Eugene Field used the majority of funds to purchase children’s shoes, undergarments, outerwear and winter accessories to stock its giving closet in the nurse’s office, according to counselor Esther Luna.
TWO ARRESTED IN WAYNE COUNTY ON DRUG CHARGES
Two people were taken into custody in Wayne County on drug charges.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 49 year old Lois Lawson and 53 year old Frank Hicks, both of Piedmont, were arrested shortly before noon on Tuesday.
Both are facing felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for methamphetamine and clonazepam.
Following their arrest, they were each held at the Wayne County Jail.
RAILROAD CROSSING MAINTENANCE TO CAUSE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF ROUTE 61 NEAR MARSTON
Route 61 in New Madrid County will be closed both today and tomorrow as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform railroad crossing maintenance.
The section of roadway being closed is located from Route 62 to Route AD near Marston.
Weather permitting, work will be performed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. both today and tomorrow.
