POPLAR BLUFF WRESTLER WINS SECOND DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP
A Poplar Bluff wrestler is celebrating her second district championship.
Poplar Bluff’s Zoe Freeman won the Class 2, District 1, championship on Saturday in the 190-pound weight class.
With her win, Freeman now advances to the State Championship Tournament, which is scheduled to begin on February 23rd in Columbia.
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR PARTS OF NORTHERN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
Snow could be returning to Southeast Missouri this afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, rain is forecast to change over to snow late this afternoon before ending tonight.
A light accumulation on grassy and elevated surfaces is possible. Officials say that there is a narrow band of heavier snow that may produce snowfall rates in the one to two inch per hour range for brief periods.
A winter weather advisory has been issued for multiple counties, including Carter, Wayne, Reynolds, and Bollinger.
POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING ALLEGED ASSAULT WITH A KNIFE
A Poplar Bluff man was taken into custody over the weekend as a part of an assault investigation.
According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 62 year old John Johns was arrested after allegedly lunging toward the victim with a knife.
The victim and Johns went to the ground and the victim was able to keep Johns on the ground until officers arrived.
Johns also bit the victim in the left arm during the struggle. The victim told officers that he had never seen Johns before and was unsure why Johns was at the victim’s residence
Johns was booked into the Butler County Jail on a charge of third degree assault.
TWO PEOPLE FOUND DEAD FOLLOWING HOUSE FIRE IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
A home fire has resulted in the deaths of two people in Southeast Missouri.
Sergeant Tyler Rowe with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that DPS received a report of a residence on fire early Sunday morning.
Fire division personnel quickly responded to the scene and while conducting firefighting efforts, located two people deceased as a result of the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and the names of the deceased are not being released at this time.
The State Fire Marshall’s Office has been requested to assist with the investigation.
MAN SENTENCED TO 80 YEARS IN PRISON ON MULTIPLE RAPE COUNTS
A man will spend the rest of his life behind bars following his conviction on multiple rape charges.
According to Second Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Sonia Hagood, a Greene County jury convicted Santiago Vasquez of five counts of rape.
On Friday, a Circuit Judge imposed a 40-year imprisonment term for each count, with two counts to run consecutively, resulting in an effective sentence of 80 years.
Vasquez was originally arrested in 2019 by the Paragould Police Department.
DRIVER EXAMINATION STATIONS TO BE CLOSED ON MULTIPLE DATES THIS MONTH
Missouri state officials are reminding motorists that driver examinations will not be available on select days this month.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, driver examination stations throughout the state will be closed today in observance of President Lincoln’s birthday.
Driver Examination Stations will also be closed on Monday, February 19, for President Washington’s birthday.
